------------------------------------------------------ The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC ------------------------------------------------------
We just landed. Dear tired and happy Hardballers! What a difference a debate makes! I don't know about you, but how much fun is it to report on issues instead of money today? But first, let me tell you about our private meeting with Mrs. Reagan. She was charming and gorgeous in Winter White. (I think it was an Yves St. Laurent double breasted jacket.) She showed us a rocking chair and note that Senator Ted Kennedy had given her from a visit President Reagan and she had shared with the Kennedy family. She told us how much she liked Mike Barnicle's piece the night before on the Reagan Library. (Thanks Mike for your poetry and prose.) People were mesmerized and did a standing O when the Guv walked her into the Debate Hall. Natch. She was clearly moved by the sentiment and by the debate staging designed and delivered by NBC News Specials Executive Producer Phil Alongi and his team as well as Hardball's own Ray Herbert and Marc Greenstein. (Even our friend and competitor David Bohrman from CNN applauded our debate set and MSNBC anchor staging.) The oddest moments were the 10 minutes of watching these potential Presidents waiting in line behind the fantastic and formidable Joanne Drake for the cue to walk out. The MSNBC road crew is on United's finest right now docking at Dulles. But the moderator of last night's historic event was up at 3am prepping for the Today show. Go to Todayshow.com for the video. He's on the air while you are reading this because on this day there is so much to chew on. David Shuster starts us off with the highlights of the debate. We have gathered some Hardballers including Craig Crawford and Susan Page as well as Air America's Mark Green. More on the debate next week but remember you can watch it this weekend. Saturday at 3pm and Sunday at Noon. Then go to politics.msnbc.com to rate the candidates. Have a happy, unhurried Hardball weekend.
