------------------------------------------------------ The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC ------------------------------------------------------
With 77 days until Election Day, things are heating up across the country in the battle to control Congress. This week, President Bush offered advice to Republicans running for office and also said that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Tonight on Hardball, Chris will talk with two Iraq veterans about the debate over the war and how big of a factor Iraq will be in the midterm election. Democrat Paul Hackett, a former U.S. House candidate in Ohio and board member for the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America PAC, and Republican Van Taylor, currently running for the U.S. House in Texas, will be here to talk about the hottest topic on voters' minds. Read the latest from Iraq on NBC News' "Blogging Baghdad": http://onthescene.msnbc.com/baghdad/2006/08/worsening_fuel_.html#posts. Also tonight, Alan Schlesinger is the Republican nominee to face Democrat Ned Lamont and "Independent" Joe Lieberman in Connecticut's U.S. Senate race, but President Bush won't back him. Why not? Do Republicans want Lieberman to win? Schlesinger will tell Chris how he thinks he can compete when his party won't help him. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" that he supports Schlesinger...but probably won't hit the trail with him. Check it out here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032608/. Chris also will talk with Mayor Louis Barletta of Hazleton, Pennsylvania, who is featured in today's Washington Post saying he wants his town to be the "toughest place on illegal immigrants in America." Is a 2008 campaign already underway? Chris will talk about it with TIME.com's Washington Editor Ana Marie Cox and reporter Anne Kornblut, who covers Clinton for the New York Times. Here's TIME's spread: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/current. And the Hardballers, Philadelphia's WPHT radio host Michael Smerconish and Democratic strategist Steve McMahon, will dive into all of the latest in the fight for power in 2006.
