            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
President Bush is scheduled to speak at 5:45 PM EST on the U.S. attorney
matter. Earlier today, the president called Attorney General Alberto Gonzales
to offer his support. What will Bush say now? We'll have complete coverage
tonight on Hardball live at 5 PM EST.

More news today from Washington - the White House announced Karl Rove, Harriet
Miers and others will meet with Congressional investigators but only for
testimony behind closed doors and not under oath. Meanwhile on Capitol Hill,
the Senate voted overwhelmingly today to take back the Attorney General's power
to fill U.S. attorney vacancies without Senate confirmation.

Hardball's David Shuster will report on the latest in the U.S. attorney
scandal, and we'll talk about it all with Jane Mayer from The New Yorker and
The Dallas Morning News' Wayne Slater, co-author of "Bush's Brain."

When the smoke clears, will Gonzales be gone? We'll ask Democratic consultant
Jenny Backus and Ed Rogers, a former adviser to President George H.W. Bush.
We'll also hear from Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AK), one of many in Congress calling
for the Gonzales resignation.

Reps. Diane Watson (D-CA) and Chris Shays (R-CT) will be here to talk about the
latest developments in the Congressional debate over Iraq. And the
Hardballers: The Weekly Standard's Matt Continetti and The Chicago Tribune's
Jill Zuckman will hash out what's been going on in the race for '08
