I don't know how you run a shell command in GTM (like ^%CLI in
Cache), but can you read from the file (e.g., using head -1)? Are you
sure of your user/group (try whoami).
What about the permissions on the directories (try ls -ld).?

I do not see the difference between your two open statements. I do not see
the open statement that shows the successful opening of the file when it was

The difference between the previous and later open statements is that the

I have looked in the data dictionary, and cant find

It's working just fine. You get all entries that either start with MA
*OR* have the abbreviation MA. FileMan is doing a multiple cross
reference look up.

Kevin,
Don't you think it is quite normal to get a state information by typing in
the abbreviation? My understanding was that when you have a cross reference
it will automatically get the data by checking the IEN number that is
associated with the cross-referenced field and then display it.
I am sorry,I typed the message under the worng subject. Anyway, what you are
looking for is a default DIVISION field in the 200 file that points to the
institution file.

That's the way it was designed (really). There are multiple indices on
this file, and you picking up matches found in the index on the state
name and also on the state abbreviation. As a programmer, you can
restrict the indexes used in a search if need be.

Thank you for your answer, but I don't think it is

when one enters a note in CPRS, it wants to know the
location of the event. This refers to entries in the
HOSPITAL LOCATION file.

I think that option just allows you to print progress notes. That's
probably the main thing you're interested in, but there are other

You can use the health summary to print the medical record of a patient. It
should be under the reports tab. I think this is what you want.

You could start with an entry in file 2, identify every record
pointing to it, every record pointing to any of those, etc., always
pruning your search when you reach an already visited node (to avoid
infinite loops), but my hunch is that you'd get a LOT of data. To
