The Jewish National and University Library recently signed an agreement with OCLC Online Computer Library Center to upload the JNUL's catalog of some 1,500,000 bibliographic records into OCLC's Worldcat database and provide regular updates of new and corrected records.
The JNUL catalog contains approximately 600,000 Hebrew script records (Hebrew, Yiddish, Ladino, etc.), 50,000 Arabic, 50,000 Russian and the remainder Latin alphabet records. The Hebrew records include not only printed books, but also the microfilm collection of the Library's Institute for Microfilmed Hebrew Manuscripts which contains over 90% of known Hebrew manuscripts from collections throughout the world. The JNUL is the first Israeli library to load records to Worldcat. We and OCLC are now working on technical aspects of loading the JNUL's entirely vernacular records into Worldcat and hope to complete the loading itself by the end of 2007. The JNUL online catalog contains all the Hebrew and most of the Arabic holdings of the Library, but approximately 450,000 pre-1984 Latin and Cyrillic alphabet publications are still listed only in the Library's card catalog. We hope to complete their conversion in the next few years.
