Re: [ha-Safran]: Children's song
Further to my earlier response, the Hebrew version (Ekhad mi yodeyah) is in Harry Coopersmith's More of the Songs We Sing (N.Y.: United Synagogue Commission on Education, 1971), p.101-2. However, the English translation is not to be trusted as literal. To compensate for that, the book includes the music is included, tho' it isn't the most traditional version! Of course, there are several melodies, and any Hagadah will have the song near the end of the book, following the conclusion of the seder proper with the singing of Next year in Jerusalem! [ha-Safran]: The four sons
Dear AJL Community, One of the pieces which resonates for me the most as a Jewish educator is that of the four sons in the Haggadah, which we read during the Passover seder. I am particularly struck by the child who is sheano yodeah leeshole unable to ask. Our tradition does not teach us to shun him from our community or belittle him because he does not know what to ask. In fact, quite the opposite, he is the learner whom we are instructed to approach and provide an opening for, in the hopes that making him feel welcome will generate further questioning on his part and lead to greater learning and understanding. I apologize to the members of this professional educational community who interpreted my request for assistance as an attempt to take advantage. And I am grateful to those members of this community who recognized in my request, the one who did not know the question and welcomed me, encouraged me, and offered to guide me in the right direction. Additionally, I am grateful to those members of this community who remembered that behind this screen is a person, and were gracious enough to contact me privately, so as not shame me, both as an individual and as a representative of my agency. [ha-Safran]: Library Consultation
Dear Ms. Witty, The project you describe in setting up the BJE of New York's resource center really does require the experience of a trained professional. Professional library consultants are listed in various professional directories, as well, such as the Librarians' Yellow Pages and the Library Journal's annual resource guide, which you will probably find at the Mid-Manhattan branch. We invite you to join our group, AJL/NYMA. If you are interested, please feel free to contact me. Liza Stabler = Elizabeth F.
