Children of the first kibbutzim in Israel were born in the early 20th
century to youthful parents, full of hope. They were called "Children
of the Sun" because they considered these children to be the "Sun
unto the Nations", an integral part of "the Revolution" in Israel.
They were born into a utopia and were destined to become the "New
Man". They were educated in an ideological society that aspired to
replace the traditional family with the collective one, to subjugate
the will of the individual in favor of the common good and a life of equality.
This fascinating and moving documentary is essential in programming
Israeli films. Already shown at several prestigious film festivals
including the Berlin Jewish Film Festival and the San Francisco
Jewish Film Festival, Ran Tal's film is made up of first person
testimonies. He makes use of archival footage shot during the early
kibbutz years and authentic audio documentation spanning the years
1930-1970. His use of the archival footage underscores the deep
collective attachment that those early pioneers felt – and the
continued nostalgia Israelis continue to feel to this day.
In addition, "Children of the Sun" was already purchased by some 20
esteemed libraries of the following universities: Yale, Harvard,
Maryland, Duke, Austin, Florida, Miami, to name a few.
