Dear Safranim,
I am in the midst of a major weed of our day school library.  While I hate to
throw books out, I don't find that doing that with outdated general studies
books is that difficult.  However, it really bothers me to throw out (or put in
shamot, as appropriate) older Judaic and Hebrew books.  For instance, as we
(finally) catalog our Hebrew language collection in our online catalog, I am
weeding, and have pulled Israeli children's books from the 1950s and 1960s that
are in marginal to fair condition, and that frankly, no child here will read.
Yet, I am reluctant to throw them out.  I checked a few of the titles in the
Israel Union Catalog, and they were all represented in collections in Israel,
but not too many copies of each.  Is there a library in North America that
collects this type of book?  Any other suggestions short of throwing them out?
I have the same problem with older American children's books.  I have set aside
a pile of books from the 1940's to the 1970's that no longer belong in our
collection, but am loathe to throw them out, since there may not be that may
extant copies in libraries. Suggestions?
Thank you.
