Dear safranim,

I’m helping one of our rabbis, who’s working on a book with another rabbi
on Medieval Midrash. In chapter two, there’s the following statement by a
Rabbi Eliezer:

Rabbi Eliezer said: the form of the lion was
rampant, his two paws were raised

opposite the horns of the bull, and
the horns of the bull went out to meet him like

                                     two /plaited webs./

FROM THE RABBI:

In the context, R. Eliezer is describing heraldic images (yes--- Jews had
a heraldic iconography in the middle ages). The rampant lion (i.e., the
lion rearing up) is a common feature in heraldic depictions. The rampant
lion is the one standing on its two back legs in an upright position. Its
two front paws are usually extended forward/upward. If you look at postage
stamps of Sweden-- just as a single example-- you will see the form I am
describing. Another beast that is also rampant, is the bull (you'll also
see unicorns and other real and fabulous creatures in the same posture). We
are ONLY interested in the bull rampant (rearing up) with its horns
extended toward to the lion's paws. I have tried to locate, track down,
find, such a depiction online, with no success.

FROM ANN:

He’s hoping I can help him find the depiction/icon/image of *the rampant
lion, paws extended toward a rampant bull's horns. *Any assistance would
be greatly appreciated and acknowledgement of the person who provides the
assistance will be placed in the notes of the book.

He has no information on R. Eliezer, who he thinks was most likely used in
this medieval text to lend an air of authority.

The image should be medieval. The lion and bull should be standing, the
bull's horns reaching for the lion's paws.

Todah!

Ann
