Manager, Research Study Rooms
Overview
The Center for Research in the Humanities provides space and access to
collections for hundreds of researchers, writers, and fellowship recipients
who depend on the New York Public Library’s resources for their work.
Reporting to the Assistant Director of the General Humanities Reference
Division, this position lies at the convergence point of key strands of the
strategic program plan and supports the library’s ongoing commitment to
user experience.

This role will facilitate the connection between researchers and library
staff across the research centers, ensuring access to expert advice,
improving researcher experience by building relationships and encouraging a
deeper level of engagement with the Library. This role will also facilitate
opportunities for frequent- and long term- users to showcase the work being
done at the Library and share their knowledge through new and existing
programs and platforms. The Manager lends support to outreach plans,
reports, and other initiatives based in the Schwarzman Building.

We are looking for someone we can count on to:

Own:

   - the management and operations of the Center for Research in the
   Humanities
   - providing support to researchers working in the Center, facilitating
   connections with staff and resources across the Library

Teach:

   - colleagues and external partners about the operations of the Center
   and its role within the Research Libraries

Learn:

   - how the Research Libraries work, including an understanding of
   operations, structure, and goals across each Research division
   - how the Center contributes to the Library's mission and strategic
   objectives

Improve:

   - operations so that they are successful, efficient, and accountable

Some expectations for this role are that within:

1 month, this person will:

   - Become familiar with the mission, strategy, and operations of the
   Center and the larger organization
   - Meet with staff members and understand the scope of their jobs and
   day-to-day responsibilities.
   - Become familiar with NYPL culture and mission

3 months, this person will:

   - Set up a regular cadence for meetings and updates with teams and
   stakeholders
   - Work with the Assistant Director to review and update the Center's
   documentation and reporting procedures
   - Develop a plan for the maintenance and use of the Center's researcher
   database
   - Be able to identify and have a process to address service issues

6 months and beyond, this person will:

   - Contribute to the strategic plan and reporting for the Center
   - Fully manage the operations and administrative duties of the Center


Responsibilities

   - Manage daily operations and administrative duties of the Center,
   including:
      - cultivating a productive research environment in the Centers study
      rooms
      - ensuring timely delivery of researcher requests and addressing
      other service issues
      - developing, distributing, and updating policies and workflows
      - maintaining statistics and researcher databases, and
      - contributing to and writing reports on Center activities
   - Manage the Center part-time staff - hiring, scheduling, training, and
   supporting this team
   - Provide oversight of the application and orientation process for the
   research study rooms, ensuring a consistent and high level of public
   service and research support
   - Support researchers working in the Center, facilitating connections
   with staff, departments, and resources across the Library
   - Maintain open and clear communication channels with researchers and
   library staff, including the publishing of a monthly Center newsletter for
   researchers
   - Develop outreach and training materials for use in the Library's
   instruction and outreach program initiatives for internal and external
   audiences
   - Maintain a personal program of continuous education and professional
   development
   - Perform related duties as required

Required Education, Experience & Skills
Required Education & Certifications
ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library and Information Studies
Required Experience
At least 3 years of public service within a large public or research
library system
Required Skills

   - Successfully demonstrated excellent public service skills
   - Excellent interpersonal skills, oral, and written communication
   skills, including the ability to deal effectively and tactfully with
   patrons and staff
   - Excellent communication skills, including the ability to articulate
   and express ideas clearly in presentations and in writing
   - Successfully demonstrated organizational skills, including meeting
   deadlines, setting priorities, and monitoring workflow.
   - Demonstrated experience using online catalogs, electronic databases,
   and internet sources in reference work
   - Demonstrated computer and word processing skills, including Google
   office products, MS Word and Excel.
   - Familiarity with Sierra, Drupal, Zoom, Tripleseat, and Airtable
