Dear Colleagues,
Here is the latest information on the luggage storage on Wednesday, June 24,
2015.
As you know, federal government buildings are high-security facilities. Anyone
bringing in luggage to the Wednesday D.C. programs will have their luggage
examined by guards potentially as many as four times-upon entering and
departing both the Library of Congress (LC) and the United States Holocaust
Memorial Museum (USHMM). So if you have any metal or any sharp objects or
other possibly dangerous devices, they will have to be removed. A room has
been reserved at the USHMM for the storage of luggage during the conference
program, and one will also be available at LC. The Library and the Museum
cannot be held responsible for items stored in these areas. Also, please keep
in mind that if a large group brings in luggage, this will slow us down
considerably and could potentially delay the beginning of the program. The
security at LC and USHMM are not equipped like an airport to deal with a large
group of travelers with luggage. In addition, at both LC and the USHMM, the
luggage must be carry-on size so that they can fit on the metal detector belts.
Larger luggage may be allowed, but would likely trigger a hand inspection.
My personal recommendation is to leave the luggage at the Sheraton Silver
Spring or to rent a locker at Union Station. We've reserved a room at the
Sheraton Silver Spring for our group's luggage. If you're traveling to the
Washington, D.C. area by bus or train, Union Station might also be a good
option. Union Station is on the Red Line from Silver Spring and is about a
ten-fifteen minute walk from the Library of Congress. The locker company at
Union Station is Tiburon Lockers, and their phone number is 202-898-1592.
All my best,
Aaron

Also, I suggest extending the advice of carry-on size bags to items brought to
the Museum. ().
