Hi all,
I have attached the information about the available tours we are providing in
Charleston. Please respond to me off list by replying with the number of the
tour you want and I will add your name to the list.

If we do not get enough people for any of the tours, I will contact those who
registered and we will consider other plans.

Email me with any particular questions, but I am hoping the information sheet
will explain everything.

See you in Charleston!

Re: [ha-Safran] Your advice requested: AJL READS

2016-03-15 Thread ALBA TOSCANO

Heidi

We have been holding live discussions at 9pm eastern on a Sunday
night. Is this a bad time?

...I was just going to say. That's 3a.m. around this popsicle stand. I
can only stay awake until ~2a.m. and then I am a gonner.
Should we hold discussions by email or in some other way that doesn’t
require showing up at a particular time?
H. That sounds fun but sounds a little bit more like a book report
and a little less like a fun discussion over coffee and cakes. Remember
the movie the /Jane Austen Book Club? /They met at a different person's
house each month to talk about one of Austen's books.
We considered methods like Google Hangouts or Facebook but wanted to
avoid making participants sign into anything. What technique do YOU
prefer for having a long distance book discussion?
Personally, I like talking on SKYPE or Web-Ex or UStream or whatever
electronic group get-together thing there is out there where we can all
see each other. I give an Intro al Judaísmo class every Tuesday evening
to a group of persons located all over Spain; it seems to work pretty well.

Even though I was asleep whenever you guys met, I bought each of the
books off of Amazon (in spanish when possible for the sake of the La
Javurá library) and read them. I think I might prefer to talk a mix of
adult, kiddie and/or young adult lit. But I'm not really bothered one
way or another. If you guyz could come on at 6-7p.m. that way I wouldn't
be sleeping like a dormouse in the teapot.

Hi Heidi,

On the Book Carnival page, you mention our Goodreads page. Is there a way to
host discussion there?

Subject: [ha-Safran] Your advice requested: AJL READS

Dear Safrinim,

We meant to hold a meeting of AJL READS on Sunday to discuss the book, The
English Spy by Daniel Silva. Embarrassingly, both Debbie Feder and myself (the
discussion leaders) got distracted and forgot to call in! Also embarrassingly,
only two members showed up for the book club, both of whom were members of the
AJL board.

Maybe the failed meeting was a blessing in disguise, because it's causing me to
re-examine what we are doing and to ask for YOUR feedback.

Our goal with the book club was to give members a way to connect outside of
conference time, to build AJL's sense of community and exchange of ideas. But
turnout has been low, and the folks who call in are mostly "the usual suspects"
- people who are already somewhat involved in AJL activities. How can we make
it more interesting, more worthwhile, and easier for people to participate in?

We have been holding live discussions at 9pm eastern on a Sunday night. Is this
a bad time? Should we hold discussions by email or in some other way that
doesn't require showing up at a particular time?

In June at the conference in Charleston we will be discussing a librarianship
book, Biblio Tech: Why Libraries Matter More Than Ever in the Age of Google by
John Palfrey. Would librarianship books be of more interest to you than
fiction, generally speaking?

We've been doing our discussions by conference call. We considered methods like
Google Hangouts or Facebook but wanted to avoid making participants sign into
anything. What technique do YOU prefer for having a long distance book
discussion?

I would really value your feedback, everyone! Please email me at
he...@cbiboca.org.

Thanks,
Heidi Estrin

[ha-Safran] Past Issues and their Current Revivals

2016-03-15 Thread Celestina Levant
Hello

We would like to introduce a new book sold by the Hebrew university Magnes
press:

Past Issues and their Current Revivals

By David
Rokeah

Almost all of the articles in this collection were published between 1971 and
2010, but they have been updated to 2015, following the re-emergence of old
controversies. The parties to the controversies include secular Jews, modern
Orthodox-nationalist Jews, Orthodox Jews, and extreme-Orthodox (Haredi) Jews.
In the Introduction, some controversies among the Pharisees, the forerunners of
the Sages, and the adducees are discussed. The Sadducees held ancient, mostly
literal, interpretations of the Hebrew Bible and of the oral traditions,
whereas the Pharisees offered new interpretations in order to meet the needs of
their day.

The religious problems were raised in Israel after 1967, when large numbers of
Russian immigrants entered the country, since many of them were not
Halachically Jewish. The Chief Rabbinate could not cope with their numbers
because of the lengthy conversion procedure. The solution offered here is to
permit civil marriage, that will also facilitate swifter conversion procedures.

In the articles, "Sharing the Burden,'' and "The Torah is his Art," the demand
of the Haredi community that yeshiva (religious academy) students should be
exempt from army service and from working in order to support their families is
refuted. The article proves that this demand absolutely negates the position of
the Sages.

In "Sharing the Burden," and in "Ze'ev Jabotinsky and Socialism,"the preferable
economic and political regime in Israel is discussed. The alternatives were: a
free and competitive Capitalistic market system, or a Socialistic / Communistic
one. The author expresses support for the free, open market.

The article, "The Sabbatical Year" (Shemittah), during which the fields must be
left fallow, points out that this agricultural regulation was designed to
prevent the impoverishment of the soil. For the same reason, it was also
practiced by the Romans. Today, however, other means of preventing this exist,
and therefore it is no longer necessary. The formal permission to sell crops of
the seventh year issued by Chief Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook improved the
condition of the farmers during that year, but the position of Rabbi Yehudah
Ha-Nasi (the Patriarch) should be adopted instead; the interdiction of the
working of the soil in the seventh year should be cancelled absolutely.

The article, "Women are Light-Minded,." analyzes the condition and position of
women in Israel, and compares them with the attitude towards women in ancient
Greece and Rome. The article on "The Deserted Wife (Agunah; Who Cannot
Remarry)" discusses divorce and the condition of a wife deserted by her husband
in the ancient and modern worlds. It seems, unfortunately, that the
interpretation of the Sages still prevails today. Read
