2014-06-12 Thread judaica man

Dear Friends and Patrons,
I am proud to be the distributor of a new book (in Hebrew): The depth of
Pshat: Understandings on the weekly Torah portion according to the Pshat. By
Rabbi Ido Pachter, September 2014, self published. The book is in 2 volumes,
268+329 pages, hardcover.Rabbi Ido Pachter is the Rabbi of the Young Israel of
Poleg Netanya, co-editor of Mekor Rishon as well as an editor of the weekly
Torah sheet, Around the Table. He also lectures at various academic and
educational institutions. His works specialize in understanding the Tanach,
Halacha and Philosophy of the Rambam, as well as modern society and the
Halacha. Rabbi Pachter's father Prof Mordechai Pachter is the well know scholar
on Kabbalah and Hassidism. In this work, Rabbi Pachter's approach to the Torah
is refreshing and unique and goes to the Pshat in our understanding of the
Torah. In the beginning of this work, Pachter makes reference to one of Israeli
Supreme Court Justice Aaron Barak's innovation on contracts -which caused an
uproar when it was introduced- and uses it as a springboard in the
understanding of the Torah. Brand new, price is $30, postage overseas is
$15.Respectfully, Dr. Baruch Falach

Re: [ha-Safran] Looking for memoirs or compilations of memoirs by Jewish women

2014-06-12 Thread Gaon Books
Anne F. Schlezinger’s book, Pulling It all Together: Diary by One of America’s
First Jewish Women Federal Judges, Introduction by Prof. Shulamit Reinharz,
Co-Director of Hadassah-Brandeis Institute narrates the story of one of the
first Jewish women lawyers hired by the Federal government in the 1930’s and
later became one of the first Jewish woman Federal judges in the 1960’s. She
endured chauvinistic questioning before Congressional committees but eventually
became a judicial insider in Washington, and her insights are interesting. Her
struggle for professional recognition shows life changing from anti-Semitism
and misogyny to acceptance of equitable participation as attorney and judge.
She was a forerunner for Judges Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Elena Kagan. “Pulling
It All Together is a highly unusual, revealing and well-edited diary that
introduces us to the life and work of one of America’s first Jewish women
judges.” - Prof. Jonathan Sarna. The book is published by Gaon Books, and the
ISBN is 9781935604013.
