Re: [ha-Safran] Talmud ebooks?

2021-11-02 Thread Freedman, Vanessa via Hasafran
Sefaria has iOS and Android apps. You can download whole books or even the
entire library to read offline.

In answer to the original question, I use Sefaria (on my iPad) to study Daf
Yomi and it works very well. You can view vocalised or unvocalised
Hebrew/Aramaic text alongside the Koren English translation, and some of the
errors in the printed Koren (of which there are many, of varying degrees of
seriousness) have been corrected in the Sefaria version. The web version has
additional functionality like viewing the biography an individual when you
click on their name.

Just out of curiousity, can files from Sefaria be downloaded to a tablet or
other reading device? While any document in pdf format can be downloaded and
read as an ebook, the readability of the text from a pdf is inferior to a
“manifestation” that was “born digitial”.

A quick note to share this new piece about DEAR MR. DICKENS by Nancy Churnin

inspiring story about a (true, historical) effort to address anti-Jewish

Everyone - my thanks to Elliot Gertel, Yoel Finkelman and other who have
brought to our attention the current financial difficulties facing the National
Library of Israel.

The plight of the NLI got me thinking about all the things we take for granted
in our lives and what our lives would be like without them. Imagine our world
without the NLI! Imagine not being able to consult the NLI catalogue, not
being able to research the NLI collections, no longer receiving one of their
amazing blogs posts or being able to download information from their website?
Consider what it would it would mean to scholarship if the Ktiv website were to
just vanish and the decades of cataloging expertise created at the Institute
for Microfilmed Hebrew Manuscripts were to just go away? Every week the NLI
freely provides data on new acquisitions to all who are interested in receiving
it. The NLI sponsors international conferences, provides workshops for
training librarians and archivists from around the world, serves as Israel's
national repository for publications and supports diasporic Jewish cultural
life.

In this moment, when life feels so fragile, the thought of a world without
libraries and the librarians and archivists that protect and serve our cultural
treasury seems almost unbearable. I have looked into how to make a cash
donation to the NLI - not in the expectation that my small contribution will
change the tide of history - but in the belief that this is a time to show
solidarity and support for that great institution and all the devoted people
who work there. If you feel similarly, see below for information on how to

Re: [ha-Safran] Papers of Hartwig Hirschfeld

2017-06-30 Thread Freedman, Vanessa
Thanks Michelle. That will be useful as I had another enquiry regarding his
family history. The original enquirer was actually looking for Hirschfeld’s
Nachlass. This isn’t a term I was familiar with but looked it up and it means
‘personal effects —used for works unpublished or unexhibited at one's death’.

Apologies - the message sent before I was ready.

Archivegrid notes that CJH has the Thorsh family collection:
http://findingaids.cjh.org/?pID=478801 of which one folder (!) contains the
following:

Folder 2 contains documentation of the Hirschfeld family of Berlin, the bulk of
which pertains to Hartwig Hirschfeld and his son David Hirschfeld. Documents
pertaining to Hartwig Hirschfeld inlude birth, citizenship, and membership
certificates; marriage contract between Hartwig Hirschfeld and Henriette
Samuel; and euology for Hartwig Hirschfeld by his son David. Documents
pertaining to David Hirschfeld include birth and military certificates; the
text of an address given on the occasion of his 70th birthday; document
pertaining to his assets; and sheet music for songs with lyrics by David
Hirschfeld. The folder also contains a marriage permission and license for
Samuel Hirsch and Rösel Meyer; and will of Rösel Hirsch née Meyer. A family
tree is also included.

There was a piece on BBC World Service last week commemorating the Battle of
Cable Street. It included interviews with participants. The emphasis was on
the Communists – many who were Jews – who organized the action and the Jewish
participation was mentioned only peripherally.

The world at large, including the Jewish world at large, does not appear to be
aware of this dramatic event that stopped the then ascendant British fascists
in their tracks.
The British Union of Fascists under the full protection of the British police
had announced their intention to march in their black-shirted, jack-booted
uniforms, through London’s East End Jewish enclave. The London East End Jews
said NO! and they, with the help of other local anti-fascists, won the bloody
battle that ensued.

When Jews were being browbeaten in a Europe that was being overrun by Nazism
and fascism, the East London Jews stoodh proud.

[ha-Safran] Digitisation of printed materials

2016-10-11 Thread Freedman, Vanessa
With apologies for cross-posting.

We have just completed digitising a pilot batch of Jewish pamphlets as part of
our Uncovering UCL's Jewish Pamphlet Collections project, and we have
encountered some issues with OCR of Hebrew and Gothic scripts (particularly
where there is a mixture of scripts in the same document) and also with the
display of parallel Hebrew and English texts. If anyone would be prepared to
share their experience of digitising printed materials then please contact me
off list.

Wishing those observing Yom Kippur a gmar chatimah tovah

[ha-Safran] FW: Hermann Gollancz's MSS

2015-12-03 Thread Freedman, Vanessa
With apologies for cross-posting.

Can anyone help with this query? As far as I know these manuscripts aren’t at
UCL.

In the John Rylands Library I came across a Syriac collection of chams (a small
codex), which is very similar to those which were published by Hermann Gollancz
in 1912 (please find the details taken from the UCL Library catalogue below):
The book of protection, being a collection of charms / now edited for the first
time from Syriac MSS. with translation, introduction, and notes by Hermann
Gollancz.
Hermann Gollancz, 1852-1930
London : Oxford University Press 1912.

The two MSS, which he published, apparently belonged to his private collection.
Now as I am working on this type of Syriac manuscripts, I am wondering, where
these two MSS came after his death? I know that his library and some of his
private papers came to UCL, but what happened to his MSS collection?

Thanks

Vanessa

2015-03-23 Thread Freedman, Vanessa
We have an institutional subscription, though it was quite difficult to
arrange, as they're not really set up for it. They don't use IP recognition, so
we have an institutional username and password, which are on a password
protected page, so they are only available to our staff and students.

Hello.

One of my professors is eager to get access to The Jewish Chronicle of London's
historical backfile online. I've contacted London, asking them if they support
institutional accounts, as opposed to individual ones.
Meanwhile, I wanted to ask the collective wisdom whether any other institution
has tried this.

Incidentally, we do have the Jewish Chronicle of London on microfilm, but the
professor wants to do searching by name.

Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Dear colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that Volume 18 of Judaica Librarianship is finally
published. The journal?s first online issue is available at
http://ajlpublishing.org. Mazel Tov to AJL!!!

AJL members should use a combination of their full name and email address to
access the full-text articles. If you have any trouble accessing the journal
articles, please contact me by replying to this email. Non-member readers of
ha-Safran may join the association at
http://www.jewishlibraries.org/main/JoinAJL.aspx.

At this point, two back issues of the journal are freely available at
http://ajlpublishing.org: Vols. 16/17 (2011) and Vol. 15 (2009). Thanks to our
Open Access policy regarding back issues, the articles in these volumes have
been downloaded more than 4,200 times, thus exceeding the circulation of both
the print issues and the reported downloads from database providers. That means
that AJL?s impact on the international scholarly community is greater than ever
before. Now that Vol. 18 is published, I plan to upload the other back issues
of Judaica Librarianship, including Vols. 1?10 that are now digitized thanks to
Laurel Wolfson of Klau Library, at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of
Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The production of Vol. 18 would not have been possible without the authors and
anonymous reviewers who contributed their talents and time to the journal; the
copyeditors, especially Judy Wolfthal, who helped with polishing the texts; all
Editorial Board members, especially past Editor-in-Chief Zachary Baker and
Associate Editor for Reviews Jim Rosenbloom, who were extremely helpful; and
Nancy Sack and Karen Ulric who assisted with technology-related issues. THANK
YOU, all!

[ha-Safran] Job vacancy - Project cataloguer, University College London

2014-04-04 Thread Freedman, Vanessa
With apologies for cross-posting.

A vacancy has arisen for a Cataloguer to work on a project that involves
cataloguing 4,000 pamphlets from UCL's Jewish Special Collections.

Working within the Retrospective cataloguing team, you will be responsible for
producing high quality bibliographic records (either in derived or original
form) for works in English, modern European and Semitic languages according to
recognised international standards (AACR2, DCRM(B), MARC21 and LCSH) on the
Aleph library management system.

The project is funded for 10 months in the first instance.

You will have a recognised qualification in librarianship and/or information
science, substantial experience of creating original catalogue records, and
thorough knowledge of cataloguing standards. Knowledge of European languages
other than English is also essential.

Experience of cataloguing material in Hebrew Script is desirable.

For more information, see
https://atsv7.wcn.co.uk/search_engine/jobs.cgi?owner=5041178ownertype=fairjcode=1409939

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Vanessa,

in light of some new information that i learned about MGK, i am revising below
some of the information
that i had sent you earlier about MGK.

1. the plan is to publish all the volumes that have appeared in the folio size
also in the quarto size.

2. the remaining folio volumes that have not yet been published in quarto size
(e.g. including Isaiah, Ezekiel) are to be published in 2014.

3. thus when the remaining volumes (of the Hagiographa) that have not yet been
published in folio size or quarto size - will be published
in quarto size (e.g. Job) - then the edition will be complete IN QUARTO SIZE.
perhaps this will be completed in 2015.

4. it is unclear when they will attempt to publish all the volumes in folio
size.

with best wishes,

Jordan Penkower

2013-12-19 Thread Freedman, Vanessa
(With apologies for cross posting)

Please see forwarded message below for another answer to the Mikraot Gedolot
question. I also received the following reply from another librarian:

I contacted Bar-Ilan University Press in summer 2012 concerning this question.
This is what they answered:

There are indeed 2 editions in the Mikraot Gedolot HaKeter Series:
The regular edition is cm 30X23.5, while the smaller edition is sized cm
24.5X17.5

The Series Editorial Board informs us that the completion of the Regular
edition will not be available within the next 3 years or so.

Subject: Mikraot Gedolot HaKeter

Vanessa,

someone called my attention to your query about Mikraot Gedolot HaKeter. here
is my response (and you can pass it on to any others who had the same query).

1. MGH was originally published (incomplete) in a folio format; i.e. all the
volumes that were published were in folio format, and had introductions.

2. HOWEVER, at some stage the actualy publication of the remaining volumes was
stalled because of lack of funds.eventually, they found a donor (Dr. Marcus
Katz), and then they resumed publication.at this point, they decided to publish
the remaining volumes in quarto size, without introductions.

3. thus, all of a sudden there appeared several (!) new volumes (whose
publication had been backed up because of lack of funds), all in the smaller
format and without the introductions: Exodus (vol. 1), Leviticus, Numbers,
Deuteronomy, Jeremiah, Twelve Prophets, the Five Scrolls. [i emphasize that
these new volumes never appeared in the folio format].

4. then the decision was also made to print some of the previous folio volumes
in the smaller format - e.g Genesis. thus, now the whole Pentateuch was
available as a set in the small format (ONLY). some of the other folio volumes
were also now reprinted in the smaller format: e.g. Samuel, Kings, Psalms.

5. they will continue to publish the new volumes (e.g. Job) in the smaller
format. thus, the complete set of all the volumes will really be a mixture of
some folio volumes, and of some quarto volumes.

6. i assume that at some later stage they may decide to publish the quarto
volumes - in folio size too (eg the one listed in #3 above), and presumably add
introductions, too. and similarly, i assume they at some later stage they will
print the remaining folio volumes in quarto size (eg Isaiah, Ezekiel).

7. i should emphasize that some of the volumes (e.g. in the folio size) have
appeared in a number of editions; i.e. they were reprinted, but with
corrections entered therein (although not particularly noted in the title page
or elsewhere).

i hope the above clarifies the matter for you.

with best wishes,

Jordan Penkower
(Prof., Bible Dept, Bar-Ilan University).

The Essay
Life in Fragments: Stories from the Cairo Genizah BBC Radio 3, 27 - 31 May
10:45pm

The Cairo Genizah is a treasure trove of manuscripts from the Ben Ezra
synagogue in Old Cairo that portrays over 800 years of community life.
Rediscovered in the 19th century, this vast communal paper-bin contained
hundreds upon thousands of scraps of rag-paper and parchment - an unedited
archive of prayers, letters, poems, magical spells, alchemical recipes,
children's exercise books, divorce deeds and pre-nuptial agreements that paints
a lively and intimate picture of daily medieval life in Egypt and the Eastern
Mediterranean.

Episode 1: The Discovery (27th May)
In this first essay, Dr Esther-Miriam Wagner of the Genizah Research Unit tells
the story of the discovery of the Genizah inside the ancient and crumbling
synagogue of Al-Fustat, a suburb of modern day Cairo. Featuring a legendary
curse, a pair of intrepid Scottish twins, an eccentric scholar and one very
generous rabbi...

Episode 2: Letters (28th May)
Intercepting private letters between medieval merchants, Dr Ben Outhwaite, Head
of the Genizah Research Unit, uncovers an international trading network that
united Jews, Muslims and Christians across Europe, North Africa and the Middle
East.

Episode 3: Women (29th May)
Looking at marriage and divorce deeds, as well as some incredibly detailed
pre-nuptial agreements, Dr Melonie Schmierer-Lee of the Genizah Research Unit
reveals the fortunes of women in medieval Cairo.

Episode 4: Three Lives (30th May)
Reading the private documents of the legendary philosopher Maimonides,
community leader Solomon ben Judah and Indian Ocean trader Abraham ben Yiju, Dr
Daniel Davies of the Genizah Research Unit sheds light on three very different
lives.

Episode 5: Alchemy Magic (31st May)
In this final essay, Dr Gabriele Ferrario of the Genizah Research Unit reveals
the most secretive side of the Genizah collection: the manuscripts relating to
alchemy and magic.
