In the spirit of Rabbi Joseph Kara, Rashi's friend and pupil, the author, Alan Smith, believes that Peshat - the plain meaning of the text (in narrative, not necessarily in laws) - must be fully understood before studying Midrash. However to understand the full meaning and implications of a text written thousands of years ago is easier said than done. The Talmud gives rules for interpreting by Derash, but not for finding the Peshat, the simple meaning of the text. In Peshat Before Derash, the author gives guidelines, with examples of how to study Torah by means of Peshat before Derash.
