Major Duties Under general supervision, the Project Archivist leads work in the Old China Hands Archives and Urban Archives; processes various archival collections, especially in the Old China Hands and Urban Archives, including intellectual and physical arrangement; develops and prepares descriptive finding aids and metadata records for the Library and Online Archive of California (OAC), and participates with other faculty and Special Collections & Archives staff in ongoing collection preservation and description activities; works with faculty and staff in Special Collections & Archives to make decisions about archival collection storage, preservation, and retention; trains and supervises student assistants and occasional student interns; provides reference services to faculty, students, and other researchers; participates in communications with donors, campus partners, community organizations, faculty and students from CSUN and/or other universities; participates in project meetings; engages in ongoing collection evaluation; contributes to outreach projects in the unit, including work on co-curated exhibits, the "Peek in the Stacks" blog, and regional professional associations such as LA as Subject; works on special projects and performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Four years Library Assistant experience with GED or equivalent OR three years Library Assistant experience with two years of college OR two years Library Assistant experience with a Bachelor's Degree in job related field required. Bachelor's degree in history or a related field; knowledge of and/or coursework in archival methods, theory, and metadata preferred. Drivers' License Preferred. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Knowledge of and ability to interpret overall library policies and procedures pertaining to assigned functional area, including knowledge of or experience with archival theory and methods, and the ability to adapt work procedures; general knowledge of library classification schemes; knowledge of bibliographic descriptive practices; knowledge of or experience with on-line systems and resources, including the ability to perform complex searches; knowledge of policies and practices associated with the ethical use of and access to library and on-line resources; knowledge of national standards pertaining to library and archives operations, and the ability to interpret and apply them, as well as explain them to patrons in order to ensure compliance; demonstrated expertise in using library automated system(s), especially subsystem(s) pertaining to the functional area; ability to investigate and research more complex problems, including analyzing and interpreting information; understanding of employment and payroll procedures related to student workers; strong written and verbal communication skills; strong communication and interpretive skills, and ability to interview patrons regarding their information needs and guide them in the use of more complex library and on-line resources. Thorough knowledge of all aspects of lead work direction including assisting in employee selection, training employees in new work procedures, assigning work, organizing work flow and establishing priorities, reviewing work, providing input to performance evaluations, and promoting teamwork to optimize effectiveness. Strong organizational skills to oversee and lead work flow in assigned area. Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook or other email systems), metadata software, audio and video transcription software, and Adobe Creative Suite. Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule The university offers an excellent benefits package. The salary range for this classification is: $3371 - $5836 per month. The anticipated hiring range: $3371 - $3800 dependent upon qualifications and experience. Hours: Full Time 40hrs/wk; 8:00am - 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, with the possibility of occasional evening and/or weekend hours General Information This position is a sensitive position as designated by the CSU.
