[Annette Goldsmith via Hasafran]

 Adaire was part of the wonderful AJLSC network that welcomed me so warmly
to Los Angeles about a dozen years ago. I didn't know her well but
appreciated what I did know -- her abundant knowledge, her warmth, and her
wit.

I've enjoyed reading other people's memories of and tributes to Adaire's
role in their lives. May her memory be for a blessing.

I have been mourning the death of our dear Adaire Klein. I have been
revisiting my first meeting with her: In 1991 I was newly married, heading
from Boston, MA to LA, CA via Teaneck, NJ where my husband's parents lived.
I had need of a mikvah in Teaneck and went to one close by. I sat in the
waiting room near a woman staffing the desk who said, "Oh I am just here
with my daughter, she's the mikvah lady-I'm just visiting and watching the
desk here. She'll be back in a minute." I was so struck by this woman's
voice. We got to talking and she told me she was visiting from Los Angeles.
Adaire asked me what I did and I told her that "I'm a librarian and had
just left my research librarian position at Harvard. We're moving to Los
Angeles." She laughed and said "I'm a librarian. When you get to LA let's
talk about what you're gonna do." Adaire was my introduction to the field
of Judaic librarianship in Los Angeles. She also welcomed and encouraged me
to be involved with the Association of Jewish Libraries.
In LA, we became friends, enjoying shabbat meals together ( I remember her
tiny dog named Cinnamon--blind, deaf and three legged), and lunches during
the week. We flew to Sacramento together to help a synagogue librarian
(Posh) whose library had suffered some damage . We shared ideas and a bond
over the idea that if all our kids learn about Jewish life is the Holocaust
then they "will head for the hills" (her words).
Manny, her husband who preceded her in death, was in my life as well. He
was a talented worker and could fix most anything. He created built-in
bookshelves in our home, pretty much according to Adaire's and my specs
because we could guarantee that the shelves will never sag under the weight
of books.
In 2013 it was my honor as president of our synagogue, B'nai David-Judea to
speak of the Klein role at our shul. Adaire and Manny's work in the shul
was vital. Adaire and Manny welcomed all and made newcomers feel important.
Every year on Simchat Torah, the children of the shul are called to gather
for a blessing under a gigantic tallis. Manny and Adaire contributed that
tallis. Adaire's reach went far beyond the walls of our shul. Her work in
the Los Angeles community with people who were choosing to become Jews, to
teach them week after week the ins and outs of being a Jew--was holy work.
And we all know of her work with the Library of the Simon Wiesenthal
Center--this too was sacred work.
I will cherish the times I spent with Adaire,
I will cherish the memory of our first meeting. It was fortuitous. I was
lucky to have known her.

was a kind, very knowledgeable, and caring person.  Adaire was one of the

1991, and was a great colleague, always very helpful, when I moved to
Southern California and joined AJLSC later that year.  In 1995, when we
held the first joint AJL-ALA program in Chicago, she was one of several
excellent presenters in a session that dealt with a range of different
collections in which Adaire detailed the purpose, goals, programs, and
materials in the Wiesenthal Center.  She will be greatly missed by her
family and, of course, the many friends and colleagues she made in AJL over
the decades.  May her memory be for a blessing.

Adaire was a mentor to everyone in AJLSC for so many years. We often would meet 
in her home in the Pico-Robertson area. She taught a number of courses to help 
those of us (like me) who were just starting out in the field. She moved to 
Israel in retirement as she and her family had always wanted to do.  I will 
remember her fondly and donate to AJL in her honor.

 My wife and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Adaire Klein, may her 
name be for a blessing. I've known Adaire for many, many years, since I was in 
high school. Adaire was a very kind and special person - she helped me expand 
my knowledge of the Holocaust, especially when I was a student at YULA HS. When 
I joined the AJLSC, Adaire helped me with programming events and gave me 
guidance and mentorship in librarianship. Moreover, I have many fond memories 
of Adaire and Manny hosting my wife and me many times, and being a grandparent 
after my daughter was born. May Adaire's name be for a memory. Barukh Dayan

[ha-Safran] Sad News

With sadness, I am reporting that Helene Gersuk, a long time member of AJL and 
AJLSC, passed away June 13, 2023. Helene was the synagogue librarian at Valley 
Beth Shalom in Encino, California. She regularly attended conferences while 
still working at VBS and qualified for advanced accreditation for the library.

Michelle, as I said to Jackie, of all the student assistants I had over the
years, Arielle lasted the longest in the job by far and was so diligent and
detail-oriented in everything she did.  Although we had only sporadic
communication
since she moved to Colorado, it is difficult to believe that we will not
only never meet again, but not exchange e-mails, phone calls, or meet
virtually either.  I should also say that she loved Yiddish language and
culture.  We first met when she came to a few of our weekly *Yidish
tish* sessions
at U-M.  I think that it may be more than a week since Arielle passed away,
and I am not in contact with her mother or any other family members, but I
will certainly send any other information to *Hasafran* should I find out
anything about any memorial events.  She will be missed.

Last night, I got the very sad, shocking news that Arielle Sokol, a former
colleague in the Near East Division, Area Programs in the Graduate Library
at the University of Michigan and AJL member, recently passed away, a most
untimely passing.

For about five years, Arielle assisted me in developing and cataloging
materials in the Judaica collections of the Judaica unit and Jewish
Heritage Collection (in the Special Collections Library).  Arielle was a
very hard worker who was self-directed and loved the work, especially in
the JHC, which is both a print and object collection.  She wanted nothing
more than to get a permanent position working with Judaica in special
collections and/or archives as a librarian or archivist after she had
completed her Masters in Information Science at U-M.  After graduation and
finishing up her job in the Library, Arielle moved to Colorado and worked
primarily in the field of music for which she had a special talent.

I was so saddened to hear this news. Our 4 children graduated from the 
Hebrew Day School, and under her guidance they had the best education 
imaginable -- both Judaic & secular. The values instilled by Marlene and 
her wonderful staff live on. She was an awesome example of all the best 
that Jewish education has to offer.

From our colleagues at Haifa University:
With great sorrow and great pain, we announce the passing of our dear friend, 
Aviva Shichor, of blessed memory. Aviva, the library's grandiose, was a 
brilliant professional, pioneering and pioneer, and among the library's leaders 
to the forefront of the technological progress of the academic libraries in 
Israel. At the end of the 1970s, Prof. Elhanan Adler assimilated the transition 
from sorting Dewey books to the method of the Library of Congress that was not 
previously known in Israel. Their common book "The Catalog: The Book of 
Foundations and Rules" was a key book, a milestone, on which many generations 
of librarians and informants grew up. Upon the transition to a computerized 
catalog system, she was appointed coordinator of the Aleph system in the 
library and after her retirement she continued to come to us and volunteer in 
the key project for Hebrew periodicals.

As a North Carolinian I mourn the sudden death of Prof. Jonathan Hess  author 
of  Deborah and Her Sisters: How One Nineteenth-Century Melodrama and a Host of 
Celebrated Actresses Put Judaism on the World Stage (Jewish Culture and 
Contexts), Germans, Jews, and the Claims of Modernityand a few other 
publications,   and the former director of the Center for Jewish Studies at the 
University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

I am so sorry to inform you of the passing of Shelly Feit, z"l, beloved
wife of Carl and mother of Kevie, Lisi Geffen and Nachi. Shelly was the
librarian at The Moriah School and member of AJL-NYMA.

The funeral will take place Tuesday, December 26, at 10:00am, at
Gutterman & Musicant, 402 Park Street, Hackensack, NJ.

Interment will be at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Fairview, NJ.

Shiva will be observed until Monday morning, January 1, at 791 Washburn
Street, Teaneck.

Shacharit: Wednesday, Thursday & Friday at 7:00am; Sunday & Monday at
8:00am. Mincha/Ma'ariv: Tuesday and Wednesday at 4:20pm; Thursday at
4:15pm; Sunday at 4:25pm.

May the family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

I am sorry to inform you that Naomi Steinberger's mother (Hadassah Markson, 
z"l) passed away on Saturday, Dec. 2nd. Naomi is the Director of Library 
Services at JTS and a past president of AJL-NYMA. The funeral was held at on 
Monday, December 4th at Plaza Memorial Chapel, NY, NY.

Naomi and her sister, Dina Markson, will observe shiva at their mother's home 
315 East 68th Street, Apt 5H, New York, NY 10065 until Sunday, December 10. 
Shaharit will be held at 7:30 am and Maariv at 7:00 pm, Tuesday through 
Thursday.  They will accept visitors from 7:30 am -2 pm and from 5 pm - 9 pm, 
Tues.-Th.; Fri., until 1 pm; and on Sat. night, after 6 pm.

Notes of condolence may be sent to Naomi Steinberger at her home: 320 West 90 
St, Apt. 6F, New York, NY 10024.

May the family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

With heavy hearts, we regret to inform you of the passing this Shabbat of Yael 
Penkower z'l, beloved wife of Monty Penkower, and cherished mother to Avi 
Penkower, Talya Roth, Yonina Simon, Ayelet Penkower, and Ariel Penkower. The 
funeral will take place tomorrow (Sunday) at 11;30 
a.m. at the Eretz HaHayim cemetery near Bet Shemesh. The family will be sitting 
shiva at 87/14 Derekh Hevron in Jerusalem.
