Re: [ha-Safran] Online Catalogs
Dear Stephanie, I use KOHA in my library. It was chosen as the ILS of choice by the person who initially set this library up. I came in with very little experience in the back end management of ILS and, without having someone around who is tech savvy and has an understanding of SQL, I found it hard going. The choice of Koha was made because it is “free” and open source. The time I spent trying to make sense of the online documentation and learning my way around to manage the rudiments probably was worth the price of a consultant. ByWater Solutions is a company devoted to supporting Koha and Koha in libraries. I assume, however, that you are as budget constrained as many of us in small libraries, and that would not be an option. They do have a “Koha Education” tab on their website with useful, if limited, information. Have you contacted Library Thing directly regarding downloading your current records? I have dealt with them too, in another context, and found them to be very helpful. Good luck, Cecile Cecile E. If anyone is using Librarything please send me your comments. Do you think an online catalog would increase library usage? Does anyone know how to export data from my current Surpass system to an online application? I've written to this list a couple of times about our experience using LIBIB to host our temple library's online catalog. If you have the resources to consider a higher-end system, such as Surpass, I probably wouldn't recommend LIBIB, which has a much smaller feature set. But if you are thinking of librarything as your system, I think you should give LIBIB a look. It's easy enough to get a free account to give it a try to see if it has the features you need and get a realistic sense of how it is to work with before committing to it. We loaded 500 records via a CSV spreadsheet and then invited a sample of congregants to test it as users and comment on their experience. We selected LIBIB after comparing it to several other options, including librarything, and we've been happy with that choice. A basic, paid account will cost $60 year, and adding accounts will bump it up in small increments. We have 3 additional editors and pay about $100 year. To be clear, we didn't have high expectations or requirements when we made that choice. I want to make sure others are realistic about this point if they follow up my recommendation. I'm available for follow up questions.
