Our organization's (UConn Animal Rights Collective <http://www.uchckillsmonkeys.com/> ) efforts over the past year, with support from a plethora of national and international advocacy groups, were instrumental in the recent termination of the nonhuman primate research program at University of CT Health Center that culminated with the unfortunate transfer of a rhesus macaque named Mowgli to the University of Mississippi Medical Center under the care of Dr. Paul May. The primary investigator on the protocol at the UConn Health Center, Dr. David Waitzman, received extensive sanctioning from the UCHC Animal Care Committee and USDA for repeated, significant violations of Animal Welfare Act that culminated in the revocation of approval for the research that involved drilling holes into the skulls of rhesus macaques. The pieces are all in place to provide a safe haven for Mowgli and we need your help to insure that the project comes to fruition. Please contact the administrators at the University of Mississippi Medical Center listed below via email and telephone and urge them, given the circumstances listed above. ~~~~~~~Addys ~~~~~~~ TO: (CLOSE SPACE BEFORE @) <jehall @physiology.umsmed.edu> <pmay @anatomy.umsmed.edu> COPY: <jgarrett @dor.umsmed.edu> <agrady @animal.umsmed.edu> <lfulton @animal.umsmed.edu> <tseaton @animal.umsmed.edu> <swarren @anatomy.umsmed.edu> BLIND COPY: Justin Goodman University of Connecticut Animal Rights Collective <justin_goodman @sbcglobal.net> ~~~~~~~ Personalize Sample Letter ~~~~>Rewrite/Judy. Dr. John Hall, Associate Vice Chancellor for Research University of Mississippi Med Center 601-984-1801 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Dr. Paul May, Professor of Anatomy University of Mississippi Medical Center 601-984-1640/1662 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Re: Please Release Mowgli Dear Chancellor Hall and Professor May: Please accept this letter as a petition. In light of the recent misconduct uncovered at the University of Connecticut Health Center and the subsequent transfer of a young macaque named Mowgli to your facility, as a taxpayer whose dollars fund this research and person who abhors cruelty, I am requesting that plans be made for Mowgli to be immediately relocated to an accredited sanctuary. Mowgli has experienced insurmountable grief and trauma. All three of his nonhuman primate companions at UCHC -- the only persons like himself whom he knows -- have died or been euthanized while he, for years, watched and waited for his turn to come. Further, I understand that in March 2006, Mowgli was pulled and choked with a collar so tightly that the blood vessels in his face burst and his eyes bled. Mowgli has suffered enough. Let him go. Mowgli has not been subjected to any invasive procedures. Please allow him to avoid further suffering and have the life he deserves -- a life free from human-caused pain. I am sure you are aware, consulting services, veterinary care, transportation funding, and a safe sanctuary home for Mowgli have been secured. Please immediately release Mowgli and participate in the relocation process. I look forward to good news that Mowgli has a chance for a good life at a safe sanctuary home.
