Feminism is a collection of social theories, political
movements and moral philosophies largely motivated by
or concerned with the liberation of women. A large
portion of feminists are especially concerned with
what they perceive to be the social, political and
economic inequality between the sexes which favors the
male gender. In the Muslim world, feminist movements
have flourished and made their presence felt. They
claim that they’re neither anti-Shari’ah nor
anti-Islam, but they depend on the Quran, Sunnah and
Ijtihad to challenge the ways in which Islam has been
distorted by Shari’ah rulings issued mostly by
ultraconservative men! The speaker will explore this
claim and give a brief account of feminist movements
in the Muslim world and identify the fundamentals of
their thoughts and ideas...

 
Invited Speaker

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mumtaz Ali holds an M.Phil
and Ph.D in Islamic Studies from Aligarh Muslim
University, India. He also obtained his M.A in Modern
Political Thought from the same institution. One of
his area of interests is Modern and Contemporary
Islamic Thought. He is currently a lecturer at the
Department of Usuluddin and Comparative Religion,
Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge, IIUM. In
March 1997, he presented a paper on Problems of
Women—Need for Islamization of Knowledge at the
International Conference on Women and Children in
Sydney. He has authored several books and presented
papers at various conferences and seminars worldwide.
He is married to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zeenath Kauthar who
authored Feminist Sexual Politics and Family
Deconstruction: an Islamic Perspective and Women in
Feminism and Politics: New Direction Toward
Islamization.
