Cambridge University Amnesty International organises peaceful demo
Welcome back everyone!
Over the past couple of weeks I have been informed that the Malaysian
Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad will be attending a conference in
Cambridge on Saturday 7th October. CUAI intends to be there to:
register our concerns over the human rights record of the current
Malaysian government (as outlined below).
give voice to the concerns of Malaysian students unable to express
themselves freely.
attract media publicity for those concerns.
I will be in contact as regards time and venue and arrangements for
the Saturday. Amnesty International is concerned that the Malaysian
government continues to use restrictive legislation such as the
Internal Security Act to curb freedom of expression and association.
Amnesty International also believes that the charges brought against
former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim were politically motivated
and that the conduct of his trial was unfair.
The "Malaysia in the New Millenium" conference which Dr. Mahathir is
due to attend has been organised by the Cambridge University
Malaysian Society. Many members of this society will be boycotting
the conference in protest at the current government's dismal human
rights record. Almost all Malaysian students at Cambridge are
government funded scholars and therefore they are unable to openly
protest......and this is where we all come in.
I will be organising a peaceful protest outside Lady Mitchell Hall,
the venue of the conference. Please come and show your support.
