MINNESOTA UNIVERSITY DENIES FACILITIES TO MUSLIMS
University attorney says "It's discrimination, but it's lawful
discrimination"
(WASHINGTON, DC - 1/8/98) CAIR is calling on Concordia University in St.
Paul, Minn., to reverse its stated position denying use of a gymnasium to
Muslims for Eid ul-Fitr prayers. According to local Muslim leaders, the
person in charge of renting the gymnasium said unnamed parties associated
with the university were "appalled that space was rented to Muslims (last
year)." The official was also quoted as saying: "The order came from the
president. Only he can change that." Another Muslim community representative
reports being told that "alumni put pressure on the president" after last
year's rental to Muslims.

When contacted by CAIR, the official stated: "A number of pastors and
professors did not feel right last year...bringing a Muslim group on a
Lutheran campus." He also stated that "the president caught a lot of flak"
for having a Muslim function on campus. Other statements referred to "Muslim
belief compared to our beliefs" and "rumblings from a belief standpoint that
went to the president."

The university official also stated it was conveyed to him that, "we need to
look at different groups...monitor certain groups." Having stated the above,
he assured CAIR that he "got along great (with Muslims) from the operational
standpoint."

In a letter faxed to Concordia University President Robert Holst, CAIR
called for an investigation of the incident and for a clarification of
university policy on religious discrimination. The letter also requested
that Muslims be allowed to rent university facilities on a space-available
basis.

Leonard Pranschke, attorney for the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, the
university's governing organization, is quoted as saying, "It's
discrimination, but it's lawful discrimination."

A university spokesman said the facility would be available for
"recreational or educational" activities, but not for a "non-Christian
religious purpose."
