MUSLIMS ASKED TO CHALLENGE EDITOR'S ANTI-MUSLIM REMARKS
(WASHINGTON, DC - 10/17/97) - CAIR is calling on the Catholic Church to
investigate allegedly anti-Muslim remarks made by one of its priests. In the
October issue of First Things journal, Editor-in-Chief Father Richard John
Neuhaus portrayed Islam as a permanent threat to Western society, used
racial and ethnic slurs against Arabs, offered inaccurate and offensive
information about the spread of Islam and the nature of Islamic
civilization, seemed to agree with those who say Muslim immigration is a
"low-level jihad," and suggested Christian-Muslim dialogue might be a
"delusion." In his article, Father Neuhaus wrote in part:
"The chief other is Islam."
"Islam's origins in the customs and values of the Arab Bedouins and of
nomadic tribes have left it with the jihad as the only way of relating to
the non-Islamic world."
The Middle East is "a world still steeped in the Arab and Bedouin mindset of
the Prophet."
"Islam's spectacular spread was brought about by brutal military conquest,
rapine, spoliation, and slavery..."
"Bat Ye'or emphasizes how little that is admired in Islamic civilization is
original..." He even puts "Islamic civilization" in quotation marks.
"By this account, then, the classical heritage that was presumably preserved
by Islam was in fact rescued from Islam by those who fled its oppression."
"However tortured the historical relationships between Christians and Jews,
each community is identified by the same biblical narrative...Judaism and
Christianity are in chronological continuity. Not so with Islam."
"...I believe Bat Ye'or and others are right to caution us against
delusions; for instance, the delusion that a Muslim-Christian dialogue can
be constructed on a basis more or less equivalent to the Jewish-Christian
dialogue..."
"The biggest problem in sight is Islam. People like Ellul and Bat Ye'or
worry about the low-level jihad of Islamic immigration in Europe...and about
the establishment of Islam in Bosnia."
"The situation in the U.S. is very different. There are probably no more
than two million Muslims in this country, and half of them are native-born
blacks...at present Muslims here pose no threat to the Judeo-Christian
identity of the culture..."
"Muslim authors...are typically so defensive, or so belligerent, or so
self-serving - or all three at once - that they would only compound
misunderstandings."
In a letter to General Secretary of the National Conference of Catholic
Bishops Msgr. Dennis Schnurr, CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad said,
"Having read documents from Vatican Council II relating to the Church's view
of Islam, I do not believe Father Neuhaus is in conformity with Church
teachings." Awad called for an investigation to determine whether Father
Neuhaus' article reflected authentic Church teachings on Islam and asked
Msgr. Schnurr to take appropriate actions to bring Father Neuhaus into
conformity with these teachings. Awad also requested a statement outlining
the steps that will be taken to mitigate the damage done to interfaith
relations by Father Neuhaus' actions
