MAS share deal under fire
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno supreme council member Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad has
questioned the MAS share deal, saying he was "extremely disappointed'' with
the decision.
He said RM8 per share was "too high a price to pay'' compared to the market
price of RM3.25 a share.
"I am disappointed that the Government has decided to save an individual
instead of trying to save the national carrier.
"How do you expect the people to react when this is what they have been
generally complaining about? Barisan Nasional will lose votes because of
this,'' he said.
Shahrir said he would write to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad
"a long letter'' on his unhappiness over the deal, adding that he would
point out why the decision was not right.
Parti Keadilan Nasional also voiced regret over the Government's decision to
buy back the shares from Tan Sri Tajudin Ramli at such a high price.
Party president Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail said the Government had
abandoned basic principles such as public accountability, transparency and
good economic sense by striking such a deal.
She said that the Government had deliberately ignored public opinion on the
matter and this would cause the public to lose faith in it.
On Wednesday, the Finance Ministry Inc entered into an agreement to buy over
the 29.09% stake in MAS from Tajudin's Naluri Bhd for RM1.792bil or at RM8
per share.
The announcement was generally seen by stock market analysts as a practical
solution to break the deadlock at MAS, given that Naluri had the controlling
stake in the airline.
