It's just the debugger deciding to tell you about every single C++
exception that gets thrown in Steam.dll. I don't know how to turn it
off, but we have adjusted some things in steam.dll to gretly reduce the
volume of the spammage in the next release.

There's a Steam.dll in your game directory. Delete it. :)
If it's not there, then find any that aren't in the main Steam directory
and delete them.

OK, I think we've found the cause of this. As a workaround for now, see
if you can keep your mod directories to be 6 folders deep or less.

Note: if you have a steam.dll file in your game directory -- for

There will be a bunch of these coming from Steam.dll -- however, even
though the sheer number is high, it shouldn't really cause that much

Debugging Source games should work the same way
- copy steam.dll to the app directory
- put steamapp.cfg file down in the app dir w/ the proper parameters
- run hl2.exe -steam -game game directly
The SteamAppId parameters are 220 for HL2, 240 for CS:S, and 280 for
HL:S.

Thanks, now I am missing the params required to setup the
steamapp.cfg, as now it tells me that steam is not running.
What params/format is required in the steamapp.cfg?

Sorry - I meant the game directory. For example:

Should I use 280 or another value?

Actually, the implementations differ drastically. The vc6 implementation
was, uh, not so good.

Put a SteamApp.cfg file down in the HLDS directory, with these flags in
it:
SteamAppUser=your Steam account name
SteamAppId=5
SteamInstallPath=path to Steam folder
Then have the debugger launch hlds.exe with -steam on the
command-line.
IOW - should be the same procedure as for a client or
Oops - You'll also need to copy Steam.dll into the HLDS directory (this
is only needed for debug-launches of HLDS).
Remember to delete Steam.dll from that location (or rename it) when you
are done.

Actually, to clear some things up:
- there aren't any Steam threads in the game process, they all exist
in the Steam.exe process. Only the game threads exist in hl.exe (Steam
commands get sent to the Steam.exe process and handled there).
- Jeff, I'm not sure what you mean. It should be fine

You need to copy Steam.dll into the HL dir as well.
SteamInstallPath should not include \Steam.exe - just the directory.
Steam should be running when you do this.
Hope that does the trick.

As to the first question: the .gcf (cache) file contains everything that
Steam downloads for that application. Files the must be written out to disk
on their own, for instance executables and user-configurable files, are
written out into the app dir.
The simplest reason for the cache file is that

There will be a Steam SDK for those developing new applications

A clarification:
With Steam, the game files will always be imported into the Steam cache
(or downloaded for those without an existing install).
Except, of course, for those files you need access to (config), executables,
and any files you add (new maps, etc). They will remain on disk, but under
for his CD (he moved a few weeks
ago). And this is why this issue came to my attention so quickly.
