The reason they do that is because if you are doing a fresh install,
you want the defaults

Is it really necessary to replace motd.txt and host.txt with updates :|
I had just set them up last night, granted it isn't a huge task, and I could
just use cvars to change the targeted files both methods are extra work :(
On the subject, I know it is low priority, but it moots all my hard work

Hey all,
Just an FYI there was a L4D2 update released a short while ago which appears
to have a server update too, I didn't see it announced:
http://store.steampowered.com/news/3217/
Left 4 Dead 2
* Changed rules for ghost placement in Scavenge Mode
* Player controlled
Lets hope that this is the first of many good L4D2 updates.

So here is a dumb question...
Why does ever single L4D2 update overwrite the MOTD file with the default
that directs here: http://www.l4d.com/l4d2_servermessage/
What is the point? Or did Valve just forget to unflag that file as included
in the update?
Or am I the only person who this annoys?
It is rather annoying, but you can use some cvars in your server.cfg to
direct your motd and host files to something else:
hostfile yourhostfile.txt
motdfile yourmotdfile.txt
I use those so even though the originals get overwritten with each update,
it doesnt matter. I've read that you can also
Until they DO unflag it, the best course of action is to set motdfile and
hostfile in your server.cfg to other filenames (motd2.txt and host2.txt
work fine!)

Same for me here, but I flagged motd and host.txt as read-only, as a quick
workaround...
