Sadly it takes a bit of work to keep a caching infrastructure up. It appears that they are having issues with their Varnish servers. In a lot of caching you can have a transparent failover system when a daemon has overrun. Likely what Valve/Steam is going through is that their Heartbeat.d-esq

I've noticed many clients timing out including myself 3-4 times this evening and I'm unsure if its server related or not. I have noticed a few of my servers have just crashed/restarted at random and I've yet to figure that out however I can't point to SM just yet or anything else that I'm running.
