Re: [hlds_linux] hacking steam accounts

2010-10-14 Thread John McCaskey
Thanks again Kyle.

FYI for everyone else, there did turn out to be a security hole allowing
bypassing of email verification if you had a properly hacked client. We pushed
out a server side fix for this and the exploit should be fixed as of this
afternoon.

If anyone has any details on Steam security exploits in the future please
continue to email me directly and we'll check them out.

John

There are tools out there that can unverify a persons Steam account email.

It's rather shocking how Valve doesn't take Security that seriously.

I'd like the full log that contains the failure time as well as the new log
from when you restarted. Also, did you kill the process instead of exiting it
cleanly? It should be impossible for the log to suddenly end at the point you

The servers buffer their log output, so you will need to flush the
logs (sv_logflush 1;sv_logflush 0) or cleanly quit the server to get
the most up to date log information.

Ok, I've got enough logs now. It looks like our TCP fallback is actually
broken in the Linux build for Steam. We'll look into fixing that and/or
pushing out a build without the fallback for now so you don't get stuck in this
state.

Re: [hlds_linux] Server's Don't Reconnect to Steam Again? :(

2009-06-16 Thread John McCaskey
The Steam code has logic to fall back to TCP instead of UDP for the Steam
connection if the UDP connection has failed repeatedly. Perhaps you have
iptables rules or a firewall that is only allowing UDP outbound to port 27017
(the Steam authentication/item/vac servers)? If that's the case then you
should unblock TCP and the reliability of your connection will be improved.

Our TF2 servers do not connect back to Steam servers automatically
either. Just today we had to restart them due to unlockables not working
on the servers.

Re: [hlds_linux] Enough already (STEAM UserID ticket)

2009-03-19 Thread John McCaskey
Users getting disconnected with the Invalid STEAM UserID ticket error in TF2
when Steam servers are down is a bug. Users are only supposed to get this type
of disconnect if Steam is up and explicitly tells your server to disconnect a
user. It should be fixed for the next TF2 update.

Error verifying STEAM UserID ticket...
I think everyone knows about this problem, we have all experience
it many times the last few months.

So after all the forumthreads and supportmails etc, inst it just easier
to fix the problem or at least tell us why the problem is there and why
you cant fix it? This way we maybe can cool down and don't be so angry
at STEAM all the time. How hard can it be to write us something about it?
And i dont mean some lame excuses.

All i hear is that i have to restart my server to resolve the problem.
Well i cant be up every night to restart the servers And if we do
restart the servers in the night all the players will be gone...

Best regards
Christopher

Yes, we'll make sure the fix gets into HLDS as well and include the fix in the
next HLDS update.

This also occurs on HLDS servers. Would be nice to see a fix too.
