Fred,
Just having a longer tuning slide and pulling the valve slides a bit can
bring your horn in Eb. But the Schmid horns use a longer mouthpipe, wich
makes the most of the difference in matching the sound between Bb and Eb.

I have been playing a Paxman 40 Bb high F for the past 10 years. I do not use
any other horn. No one is able to tell the difference. I use the muting valve
to cover the lower register and other notes that do not work so well. It also

If that's whom you are emulating, Hans may have proven his point. To my
ears,
at least, Ohno's sound was very harsh when playing on his triple. Far
from the

Herb, I don't claim to be emulating Mr. Ohno's sound
How can one have a full sound or characteristic sound on a high F or high E-flat-side
? This is contradictory. The only way to keep a full(er) sound might be, to stay on
the Bb-side of your Pax 44 as much as possible use the high F side for high
entrances only but returning to the Bb-side as

Hans,
Can you share your definitions of timbre and sound quality and
compare the two for our edification?

I have been giving consideration to asking our local repairman to construct
a replacement slide that would take the high F-side of my Paxman 44 into Eb.
I'm thinking about this because of comments I've read here and there
indicating that one might obtain a more full and more characteristic sound

Hi Fred,
IMHO, this only works if you can add length to the
tapered part of the leadpipe the hi F side of the
horn uses. I dont believe it does any good to add
to the length of the cylindrical tubes. The hi F horn
sounds more honky (sax'y) the

BTW, I think the optiponal Eb slides on the
E. Schmid are for transposition considerations
and I don't think they affect the hi F horn ???
I may be wrong ... but you may want to revisit this
issue. I will double check my notes and reference
