MSc Studentships
School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences

MSc in Environmental Biogeochemistry (5 studentships)

This course is designed to provide biology, chemistry, and Earth and environmental
science graduates with the advanced skills, knowledge and understanding appropriate
for success as technically aware scientists in the environmental industry. It also
forms an introduction to biogeochemistry for students wishing to progress to a
research career.
The course begins with a series of taught units which lead you sequentially and
logically from the "pure" science through to its environmental applications. Initial
units present key chemical and microbiological concepts, emphasise the importance of
microbial catalysis in low-temperature geochemistry, and provide analytical skills.
The origins, toxicity, and fates of organic and inorganic pollutants are then
introduced, and the uses of microorganisms for remedial purposes are considered.
Finally, biogeochemistry, and biogeochemical tools, are discussed within the contexts
of such key environmental issues as contaminated land, groundwater quality, and
pollution control. On completion of the taught units, you carry out an individual
research project. These projects are often laboratory-based, but may involve
desk-studies, or computer-modelling. You might work within one of our established
research-groups, or in collaboration with an industrial partner. You will be
encouraged to publish your results.
The course is supported by NERC, who provide 5 full studentships.
MSc in Petroleum Geochemistry (6 studentships)
This course is designed to equip Earth science and chemistry graduates with the
advanced skills, knowledge and understanding appropriate for them to achieve success
in the petroleum, environmental and their service industries, and to allow the
conversion of skilled graduates into organic geochemists capable of academic research.
The course begins with a series of taught units which place the role of geochemistry
in its petroleum industry context and then lead you sequentially and logically through
the key aspects of a petroleum system. Early units describe the deposition, and
analysis of source rocks and their associated organic matter. The processes by which
petroleum is generated, migrates and accumulates are then explored, as are new
applications of geochemistry to reservoir description and production (in many cases
developed by course teachers). Finally, all aspects are integrated in a Petroleum
System Analysis.
On completion of the taught units, you carry out an individual research project. These
are often laboratory-based, but may involve desk studies, or computer-modelling. You
might work within one of our established research-groups, or in collaboration with an
industrial partner. You will be encouraged to publish the results of your work.
The course is supported by NERC, who provide 6 full studentships.
