we're in the midst of migrating our workload out from STK's VSMs to IBM's VE
TS7740 (set up in a dual cluster grid). this grid is shared by several SYSPLEX.

during the VSM days, the tapes weren't SMS-managed. if there is a need to
troubleshoot a job failure in
non-SMS: when a VSAM file is created
SMS: when a file is created
in a newly-initialized volume, a newly-defined dataset will occupy space

problem is, if the first dataset is removed, there will be a gap that
may be hard to be filled.

with BLKSIZE=340, the old copy was 9600 trks with 93% used.
with BLKSIZE=8840, i allocated 9000 trks -- used 61%
