Guy,
I know the old CFL's I have do cause carriers up and down the dial, if
the radio is in the same room. At less than 25 cents each for a standard
bulb, I don't see any need to buy a CFL anyway. Too many gismo's in
today's world cause RF QRM.

Listened from 1404-1430 utc and conditions were better than the last few days.
Lots of carriers and 7 with audio.
594 JOAK poor at 1414.
648 Russia poor at 1415.
657 North Korea fair at 1417.
747 JOIB very poor at 1422.
756 Very poor audio at 1423 not sure who.
774 JOUB fair at 1425.
What amazes me is just how strong their IBOC was compared to their
modulation on 1380.
At times I could hear the carrier, but had trouble hearing what was being
said, due to low modulation and other signals on the frequency.
Yet the IBOC was pounding away loudly especially on 1370.

Not for long. 4 for 99 cents, I bet you have to replace them often.
The GE Reveal, and the Sylvania counterpart are bright and white. My tests show
they don't come remotely close to rated hours, and I was running them 24/7
which means they should last WELL past rated hours. This test was run
I think the unhealthy UV from a CFL is a myth. It would have to be so bright
you couldn't be in the same room. All fluorescents have some mercury. If you
are THAT worried about UV never go outside ;)

It sounded like they were on with high power, but low modulation. I
guess the IBOC hash gets out as well even with the modulation is low.

Hello Guys,
A second Gobbler has checked in for the 2009 Ultralight AM-DX Shootout.

An odd morning; erratic signal levels and a couple of mysteries; first
impression was that it wasn't as good as yesterday overall, and better on the
low band. The propagation monitor said that signals were better overnight
overall than when approaching sunrise. Listened from 1430 to 1500 and
In regard to HD stations in all cases any of them, I cannot listen to
them at night. None, as once the skip gets a hold of them, it sounds
like there in is fraight train in the background. I checked many of them
like KSL, KEX, KFBK, etc and all are rough to listen to.
The overall trend does
Will this take away the whistles and other stuff I get at night?

I have one for the outside of the house on the front. There is a micro portch
and the fixture is partially protected. I had to dissassemble the fixture to
some extent for this CFL. It draws 63 watts. The claim is it is as bright as a

I was tuning across the AM dial January 31st on my tiny Sony SRF59 walkman
and right at 11pm Central, I heard in the jumble K**V Hollister Branson and
the Ozarks, 1570 AM.. The Bott Radio Network or something similar to that.
The signal was NOT very strong at all, then maybe a minute

The long awaited G3 is due April 15. It also will have synchronous detection.
Then there is the Mini 400. It looks like a totally digital radio with AM / FM
/ SW. No date, just early 2009. This might be a Ultralight candidate.

Colin,
You are right. There is little IBOC on the AM dial in the NW compared to
other areas. However, several NPRs are using it, eg 1340-Tumwater,
1230-Medford, 950-Roseburg, and 1490-Yreka. Even though their QRM is
little, I still get it at night.

Powell,
A tunable loop antenna (when tuned properly) will add an extra tuned
circuit on the frequency of the Mini 300, helping not only to boost the
signal,
but also filter out whistles and images. The degree of signal enhancement
usually is related to the quality of the loopstick
