5,000 YEARS OF CULTURE STOLEN FROM BAGHDAD
Malcom Lagauche
Today, I was looking at some photos a friend of mine gave me of Baghdad in the late 1990s. Evidence of destruction by U.S. forces and degradation of the city because of the illegal embargo placed on Iraq were present, yet the city was still magnificent. Today, Baghdad resembles nothing of the city I saw in the photos. It is a destroyed city in which U.S. profiteers and mercenaries have set up a security area called "The Green Zone" where they can safely h! ide while reaping the benefits of murder and looting. Last April, I ran the following column, but it still is relevant today (...) Baghdad cries today. It has been defeated. Its soul no longer exists. It was destroyed by the real forces of evil in this world — bigotry, xenophobia, ethnocentrism, and deceit — not those entities whom the U.S. president has designated as evil. Bush throws around the word "evil" with ease and frequency, but he is the number one practitioner of evil in the world. No one else comes close...

Several Iraqis die in US attacks
Aljazeera.net

Saddam's lawyer seeks Japanese help
Julian Ryall, Aljazeera.net
..."According to international law, Saddam Hussein and his government are still the legitimate leadership of Iraq and everything that has happened since the start of the occupation is illegal," al-Khasawna said. The reason behind the invasion of Iraq was the "Zionist way of thinking" that required the complete destruction of the country and its leader - including its museums, ministries, archives and treasures - in an effort to end a civilisation tha! t stretches back more than 8000 years to ensure there is no future threat to Israel (...) Despite being the head of Hussein's legal team, al-Khasawna has not been allowed by the US military authorities to meet his client, although a colleague met the deposed Iraqi leader in November last year. Hussein is reportedly in good health, despite being held in a small cell and not permitted to listen to the radio, watch television or read newspapers. He also has not been allowed to receive personal items from his family and has only been given four "of the millions of letters" that have been sent to him. Yet, al-Khasawna's colleague says he remains in good spirits...

115 die in a single blast today in Iraq and 30 U.S. Soldiers die in 13 days. BRING THE TROOPS HOME NOW.
Les Blough, Editor, Axis of Logic
...As U.S. citizens we must lay responsibility for this hellish nightmare where it belongs - at the feet of George Walker Bush, Dick Cheney, the rest of the regime and the U.S. legislators and senators who have supported the war and occupation from the beginning. These mass killers must be brought to justice before the world spins further out of control. There is no end in sigh! t to the savagery and not a single reason to believe that their appetite for blood will be sated. They must be stopped because they will not stop on their own. But these killers are not only responsible for the deaths of so many Iraqi men, women and children. They are also responsibile for the growing number U.S. military men and women who have been killed in this war. Many if not most of these recruits also ended up in Iraq to avoid unemployment and economic hardship. Now there is reason to believe that the U.S. government and the Pentagon have been lying about the numbers of their own soldiers who have been killed and wounded...

US HR Report Disregards Abu Ghraib
IslamOnline.net
Turning a blind eye to abuses of prisoners in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo at the hands of its own forces, the United States annual report on human rights rebuked its Mideast allies for their poor records in the field. The criticism was contained in the State Department's report on human rights progress in2004 , the first issued since US President George W. Bush was reelected for a second term in office, reported Agence France-Presse (AFP)...

The Associated Press
Two human rights groups filed a lawsuit today against Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld on behalf of eight men allegedly tortured by U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Bright Side of Having Your Arms and Legs Blown Off
Thomas DiLorenz

The Business section of today's Washington Post has an article about Iraq War veterans who came home missing arms and legs but who are nevetheless "in high demand" by government contractors. Next to pictures of legless veterans doing push-ups and sit-ups is an article about how military contractors are hiring the disabled veterans to assist in the building of National Greatness Conservativism in Iraq -- and to help in the manufacture of more deadly weapons...

Cruel and usual
Gary Younge, The Guardian
...Like the US government following revelations from Abu Ghraib, the British government wants to dismiss the miscreants as the deviant wrongdoers in an otherwise noble cause. But the truth is that the atrocities committed in Camp Breadbasket were not aberrant but as consistent with Britain's colonial tradition and invasion of Iraq as Brown's statements are with our post-colonial amnesia. The evidence arising from the case suggests that some other enduring values - brutali! ty, cruelty, oppression and racism - are more readily associated with British rule in much of the world from Ireland to India...

Iraqis protest having Saturday off
Raed Jarra, Raed in the Middle
...The war against Iraq and Iraqis continues. A couple of weeks ago the Iraqi "government", assigned by the occupation forces, decided to make Saturday part of the official weekend. Why Saturday? Why not Thursday as all the other Islamic Countries are? (except in Jordan, in case we want to count it as Islamic or Arab). It is more regular, and culturally appropriate, to make Friday as THE holiday, and Thursday as an additional weekend day or at leas! t a half working day, so that people can leave work early and get ready for the Thursday's eve. The Bush administration decided to make Saturday as the day off, they didn't even wait until the fake Iraqi "elected" government started functioning!...

The blame for the Iraq war lies with our supine cabinet
Peter Hennessy, The Guardian
Who would have thought that 13 pages of paper would so come to haunt Tony Blair? Yet the full version of the opinion drawn up by the attorney general, Lord Goldsmith, about the legality of a military attack on Iraq will, I suspect, come to rank in recent British history only with the protocol enshrining the Anglo-French-Israeli collusion before the invasion of Suez in 1956. Sir Anthony Eden instructed his cabinet secretary to bur! n the British copy of that protocol...

Pentagon Casualty Figures.
Don't Add Up

Jim, rense.com
Today I'm going to do something a little bit like journalism, except I haven't done any real follow-up. Still, it's an important issue, and I'd like any Google maestros reading to help. Go to your local newspaper site, or TV station site, and do a search for "local man woman killed wounded Iraq". Weed out the duplicates, total the numbers, and then check them against the casualty lists, because there's something funny going on here. I started to notice s! omething several months ago. The local papers would interview the mother of someone killed or wounded in Iraq, and more often than not, there'd be a bitter aside: "Of course, for some reason, he's not included in the official totals." Somehow, that struck a chord. And the thought crystallized: They're lying about the numbers. Think about it - it's absurd to think they wouldn't, considering everything else they've done...

A June Attack on Iran?
Year Four in the Five Year Plan

GARY LEUPP, CounterPunch
According to Gen. Wesley Clark, a senior U.S. military officer told him in the Pentagon as early as November 2001 that the administration planned, following the invasion of Iraq, to conduct campaigns throughout the Middle East and beyond. "Oh yes, sir, not only is it Afghanistan. There's a list of countries. We're not that good at fighting terrorists, so we're going after states: Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia and Ira! n. There's a five-year plan"...

Arrogant? Guilty as Charged
Allan Slater, Electronic Iraq
"The use of deadly force authorized beyond this point." This is the best translation I have for the sign in Arabic beside the military checkpoint outside the city of Fallujah. Hundreds of cars and thousands of people line up to pass that sign on their way to their homes in the city. As we pass by Fallujah we can see the nearest subdivisions from the highway. The homes are deserted. Half of them have collapsed roofs because of the U.S. bombing. All the stan! ding walls are pockmarked with bullet holes and huge holes from tank fire...

Independent Press Was a Target in Iraq
Danny Schechter
With CNN's Eason Jordan silent, or silenced, the right brain of the blogosphere has nailed a new media scalp to its belt. Mr. Jordan, who had been with CNN for 23 years, said during the World Economic Forum in Switzerland that a dozen journalists covering the war "not only [had] been killed by U.S. troops in Iraq but they had in fact been targeted," according to press accounts. Mr. Jordan quickly tried to back off his statement, but the reverberations led to ! his resignation...

Iraq injuries differ from past wars: More amputations, brain traumas
William M. Welch, USA TODAY
The war in Iraq is producing a group of young combat veterans who face a lifelong struggle to cope with physical wounds so severe, they might not have lived through previous conflicts. The nation's system of veterans' health care is already seeing the first of those men and women, saved by modern battlefield medicine but in need of long-term rehabilitation. While their numbers are not nearly as large as the injured fr! om Vietnam or World War II, the severity of their wounds is often greater than from previous wars...

DU: Possibly the Worst War Crime in History
Kurt Nimmo
It is totally astounding. Bush Senior, Clinton, and Bush the Junior are war criminals of a caliber not witnessed since the war against the people of Vietnam (2-3 million killed). It is estimated this threesome of mass murder have killed around 1.5 million Iraqis (under the supervision of Bush I and Clinton), at least 3,620 Afghan civilians (according to a count conducted by Marc Herold of the Guardian as of August 2002) and 100,00 Iraqi civilians under the su! pervision of Bush II (according to research conducted by The Lancet medical journal). Add to this staggering death toll approaching 2 million another 11,000 Americans killed by “Gulf War Syndrome” and you have crimes of Nuremberg tribunal proportions...
