MPAC RESPONDS TO LATEST BIN LADEN TAPE

(Washington, DC - 1/19/06) -- The Muslim Public Affairs Council today called on American Muslims to be vigilant of potential threats to their nation, in response to the recently released threat against America allegedly issued by Osama bin Laden.

In an audio tape aired this morning on Al-Jazeera, a voice identified as bin Laden states that "it's only a matter of time" before London-style attacks take place in the United States. He further threatens: "They are in the planning stages, and you will see them in the heart of your land as soon as the planning is complete, God willing."

MPAC calls on all American Muslims to reach out to local law enforcement agencies that are engaged with their communities on a regular basis to offer support and assistance in protecting our nation.  In May 2004, MPAC launched its National Grassroots Campaign to Fight Terrorism , a mosque-based program which is aimed at ensuring that American Muslim institutions are not leveraged by saboteurs to commit or plan acts of terror.

This morning, the Muslim Public Affairs Council called FBI headquarters to offer their support and services to aid in protective measures for our country in response to Bin Laden's message.  The Muslim American community through its national organizations, community institutions and mosques is engaged with Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) officials across the nation in an ongoing cooperative, coordinated effort to protect our nation. Since 9/11, Muslim Americans have engaged in extensive counter-extremism and counter-terrorism efforts. Examples include the Council on American-Islamic Relations' "Not in Our Name" petition campaign and the Muslim American Society's anti-terrorism campaign.

Additionally, MPAC is taking the following steps:
  • Contacting all mosques and student groups to be vigilant and to implement the Grassroots Campaign to Fight Terrorism (SEE: www.mpac.org/atc).
  • Calling on Muslim leaders to reach out to the Joint Terrorism Task Force in their local regions.
  • Calling on leaders of Friday congregational prayers (called "khateebs") to focus their sermons on reminding their congregation that protecting the country is their Islamic duty.
In addition to the threat articulated on the tape, Bin Laden also offers a "long-term truce" to the United States in order to allow the re-building of Iraq and Afghanistan. MPAC is appalled that Bin Laden, who has inspired and directed the killing of innocent Muslims and non-Muslims across the globe, would attempt to cast himself as a statesman, with religious and political authority to participate in negotiations.  Any truce offer, if to be taken seriously, must be accompanied by a renouncement, or fatwa, against terrorism as a means of legitimate struggle in Islam. As a reflection of core Islamic teachings and Muslim sentiment worldwide, Bin Laden must categorically declare that Islam denounces terrorism. According to core Islamic teachings, innocent lives cannot be used as leverage to advance any agenda.

MPAC remains committed to working for the advancement of peace and justice through legitimate, mainstream channels.  As such, MPAC supports the people of Iraq and Afghanistan in their painstaking efforts to build sustainable and viable approaches to governance.

{Invite (mankind, O Muhammad ) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Qur'an) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided.}
(Holy Quran-16:125)

{And who is better in speech than he who [says: "My Lord is Allah (believes in His Oneness)," and then stands straight (acts upon His Order), and] invites (men) to Allah's (Islamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds, and says: "I am one of the Muslims."} (Holy Quran-41:33)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By Allah, if Allah guides one person by you, it is better for you than the best types of camels." [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)  also said, "Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all."
[Muslim, Ahmad, Aboo Daawood, an-Nasaa'ee, at-Tirmidhee, Ibn Maajah]
