all CI builds are happy, dependency will be gone in 1.17.

Somehow we must have overlooked the dependency scope was not restricted to
"test" when the PR was merged.

It looks as if the PR wanted to replace the transitive dependency of Powermock
with a more recent version. I'm not really sure why. For tests I've just
removed the dependency completely and we'll see what the different CI systems
say.

This commit introduced a transitive POM dependency on objenesis, which doesn't
seem to be required (at least not for the code, maybe for the tests -- didn't
check). Is this really what it ought to be?

Simon Spero commented on COMPRESS-413:

I will try a few sample builds to to check for effect on build time to
completion. If there's no important effect then this is fine; if it is
important then I may reorder the matrix.

I will submit an issue with a patch for changes that belong in parent
(unless parent is now in git.

The indicated errors are the ones I expect to see with the final 9-ea. The
illegal access from the mocker in ZCompressorInputStreamTest is reduced to
a warning in RC, which is acceptable for testing and can be left for now.

The timestamp behavior is an error, but I am not sure if the new behavior
in jdk 9 is wrong and needs a workaround, or right and needs a workaround,
or is wrong but should be ignored as it seems to be a deliberate decision
to not hack around DOS years after 2099. Adapting to follow jdk behavior
seems to be the best bet for now, since the error is being detected in a
situation where there are correct timestamps.

I could file an issue in this for jdk core-libs but I think this might be
scheduled for a fix in jdk 49).

(My current thinking is to deprecate the use of DOS times for creating
archives after that year, and to ensure that any consent forms for
replicating or storing any simulation of what "I" "perceive" as "my"
"consciousness" stipulate that no such contents may be stored in zip
format.

It will go next to the clause refusing permission to transform me into a
brain in a vat unless it's VAT 69)

Oracle JDK 7 is EOL and is missing critical security patches. OpenJDK 7
is at least lightly patched.

Oracle JDK and OpenJDK are in a different situation to IBM java.
Open/Oracle JDKs both use the same virtual machine, and the roughly the
same source trees, whereas IBM java uses a completely different VM
implementation (J9), and also has a few differences in the runtime
libraries (mostly openjdk, but there are a few differences). Any code that
uses private interfaces not covered by the TCK is having problems.

I haven't had any

We all know that Java 7 is EOL but that is the required platform currently.
As we have seen in Commons with other components, the IBM JDK sometimes gives
surprising results. It is my opinion that we do loose confidence that all is
well everywhere by omitting building on Oracle's JDK.

Oracle JDK 7 has been dead for two years. Openjdk 7 has some back ports of
security patches, but both are gone from most Linux distros.

Openjdk and oraclejdk 8 are essentially in sync, with the only differences
really being the oracle proprietary stuff. There's not much win testing against
both unless the oracle commercial stuff is being used.

Builds for PRs are already covered -

we could add support for building arbitrary branches if we wanted to using
build pipelines. We just haven't got that many branches outside of PRs (master
and the stalled compress-2.0 experiment). :-)

https://github.com/apache/commons-compress/pull/43

Travis has some nice properties, especially when working with forks. It's
very easy to enable travis for a fork, so CI can be done before a PR goes in.

Travis can also run really quickly, but only when tuned properly, and when
the system is not running at capacity. If the stars are aligned, you can get
every job in a big 'ol matrix running in parallel (each container build gets 2
cores and max 4GB of memory), which is nice if they're free. The critical
thing is to be using the container environments and not the VM, as the startup
time is tiny. The annoying thing about Travis is that the default environment
is running Ubuntu 12.04, which is well past its LTS date. The trusty (14.04)
container is *still* marked as beta, despite being on a production level update
cycle (set group to edge for that real beta experience). The 12.04 containers
all have to do a lot of package replacement on startup, which takes away some
of the benefits of having a container ). I kept the home server on 12.04 until
the end of LTS because Travis, then went to xenial (16.04) which is the
current LTS, and has nice things like proper zfs (hey- an apache connection).

Hudkins farms in my mental model usually seem to be more congested, but
there are good reasons not to believe that.

I think there is also some jacoco oddness related to synthetic methods in
certain JDKs , but mostly I blame coveralls, since I'm not sure jacoco is wrong
:-)
IntelliJ has a bunch of different coverage tracers, including jacoco, and
they have a spread of class and line counts that seems to be all synthetic
accessor related.
Oh for statement level "ignore".

[jira] [Commented] (COMPRESS-413) Travis build redundantly repeats compilation and tests redundantly

I'll strip out the AsiExtraField foo. I just have the strategic reserve of
coverage increasers for coverall-shutting-up.

My main issue with Java 7 compatibility is that the primary use case now is
some older android releases (which can't do Java 8 default/static methods), but
android compatibility testing at its most basic requires using a different
animal-sniffer scent (anything else is difficult without gradle).

Closing because there's a new PR without the coveralls bait.
Coveralls complains.

The mvnw is not essential yet, but it's good to have 3.5.0 in place.

Thanks Simon.

TBH I'm not too sure why we've got Travis builds at all, probably so we can
run Coveralls. I'll leave this request open for those more interested in the
Travis CI setup. I'll rather invest some time in adding a Jenkins matrix build
for the JDKs we want to support instead.

Commons Compress aims to be compatible with Java7, no matter how old or
deprecated, but we already cover that with Jenkins - the pull request builder
over there uses Oracle JDK 7, so we've got that covered independent of Travis
CI. We do run SonarQube for Compress already.

Personally I dislike `mvnw` scripts, but this is probably a matter of
taste. I won't veto its introduction.

Please strip the changes to `AsiExtraField` from this PR, they are
completely unrelated.

COMPRESS-413: Performance improvements for Travis builds

Change travis configuration to
- skip pre-build install (which runs the install goal).
- remove after_success code.
- use mvnw to use up-to-date version of maven.
- run all goals/phases previously included in after_sucess phase, using
-Ptravis-jacoco profile if one exists.
  - clean
  - apache-rat:check
  - test
  - jacoco:report
  - coveralls:report

  - This will fail the build if any of the above goals fail. The goals that
are most likely to fail are: apache-rat:check and test. coveralls configuration
is changed in pom to not fail the build if the service is not available (e.g.
for forks that do not have repository registered with coveralls).

 - Note that the apache-rat: check could be added to the pom (executing by
default in the validate phase)
 - Also note that the jacoco:check goal can be added to the pom
(executing by default in the verify phase).
 - the script could then be changed to execute the verify goal.
 - coveralls stuff could be run in an after_success script. That script
could restrict coveralls notification to a single point in the jdk matrix

Further, Oracle JDK 7 hit EOL *over 2 years* ago!
OpenJDK 7 has seen only sporadic patching, and is no longer part of any ubuntu
LTS release.

It is probably worth only testing under at most one of these environments
(also, current tests run against really, really old versions of jdk8)
