The incompatibilities with Python 2.6 - 2.7 are pretty minimal, and most
modern software targets 2.7+. If nothing notable depends on python26, then I
am fully in support of dropping python26 packages in favor of python27, which
people should be using anyway.

python26 was accepted into EPEL 5 and has been EOL'd from IUS. Though, because
IUS relies on EPEL its all the same if you're subscribed to both:
$ sudo yum install python26
You can then access it as:
$ /usr/bin/python2.6
