What do you mean by a "native core" to 2D? The reference implementation
of the 2D API has always been a blend of both native and Java code, each
being used where it seems to work best...

The current releases all have hardware acceleration on Win32 for
onscreen operations. We are currently working on hardware acceleration
for offscreen surfaces for our Merlin release (jdk1.4).
