This will not be of any great help for your problem, but my JAWS does not remove the UNRD flag on messages if you are just using your cursor to see what the subjects Is and not opening the message. There are settings in JAWS that control what labels (like UNRD) are spoken. So the best you can do

To me it sounds like the reading pane is on. This means that when you move up/down in the list of messages they are displayed in the reading pane and therefore marked as read. Go to the View ribbon sub menu, Layout sub menu, Reading Pane and set it to off. -Original Message- From:
