Hello everyone,

I had a real problem with Jaws 16 and several keyboards I was using. The
hotkey INSERT+V which opens the Quick Settings dialog was not recognized.
The issue has now been resolved but I thought the information might be
useful to someone else who has this problem.

KEYBOARD COMMANDS NOT RECOGNIZED BY JAWS 16

1. Is this problem unique to one computer?

2. If so, have you tried several different keyboards with the same
results?

3. Do remote keyboards act differently than hard wired ones?

In my case, I have an older HP desktop. When I pressed INSERT+V, nothing
would happen. I tried changing keyboards, thinking there was an issue with
that particular wireless model. There was no change. Next, I purchased a
keyboard which connected directly to the system using a USB interface.
Again, that made no difference.

Finally, I decided to institute a Jaws Repair.

. I located my Jaws 16 disk and clicked on the Run option when
Autoload came up.

. I followed the steps, choosing Jaws from the options offered.

. Eventually, the installation wizard came to a series of buttons
including Repair. I pressed Enter on that choice.

. Jaws went through quite a lengthy process, then asked me if I
wanted to save my personal settings. I chose yes.

. Finally, Jaws informed me that I needed to restart my system for
the changes to take effect. I pressed Enter on the Okay button.

. When restarting, Jaws goes through a dialog similar to the Basics
Settings menu in Options. I carefully went through all of those settings
since Jaws will occasionally remove check marks in some areas.

As soon as Jaws started up, I checked by pressing INSERT+V. It worked!
Apparently, something had gone wrong with the original installation or with
one of the updates which followed.

Important Note: Apparently, when a repair is initiated, it has no effect on
the current version of Jaws in your system.

Finally, if you decide to purchase a wireless keyboard, be sure to buy one
of the models which are rated as better quality. Theoretically, a remote
connection should have no effect on the keyboard's functionality. However,
it has been my experience that wireless keyboards which are relatively low
quality tend to behave oddly at times.

Several manufacturers are normally reliable:

Digilogic,

Microsoft,

HP,

On the other hand, USB keyboards are normally reliable, even the ones which
are inexpensive. The only issue is that the contact points wear quickly.
The average age of n inexpensive USB keyboard is about two years.
