(hence, I haven't tried recompiling everything from scratch). I could use
some suggestions for what might be going on or what to look at to figure out
what might be going on.

and could very well be entirely
unnecessary. The point really is I set wpath to what I want it to be and
then use that value as part of my other JDE variables.

JDE 2.2.7beta10, Emacs 20.7.1 on Windows 2000
I only recently moved from 2.2.6, where I did not notice this, to
2.2.7beta10, so I can't say whether the behavior is relatively recent or
not.
