Šime, $('title').html() works fine in both IE8 and FF, fixing my problem. But I don't understand why the difference in behaviour on title: surely if there's only one title element than the innerHTML of the first matched element should be the same as the concatenated innerHTML of all matched

Well, maybe the guys at jQuery optimized the text method only for elements that can appear more than once... I don't know. However, text() should not be used for TITLE anyway, so this bug is not a problem.
