It seems the double-width assumption isn't being properly rendered. The newly
attached test case tries to show this by replacing the Ace of Clubs code point
by (doubled) ascii char

I have no insight into internals at all, but was also struck by the fact that
the playing card showed up. It seemed to me that if it shows up it must be OK
