A new empty tab always appears at the end of the tab tree. There should be the
option to automatically open it next to the active tab. It is also desirable to
have the possibility of opening a new empty tab as a child of the active tab,
for instant by middle-click on the "New Tab" button at the bottom of the side
bar.
