The patch will need to be based on master, since this is a new feature. you can
re-base it in your local checkout using `git pull --rebase origin/master`

Another idea: Split button has a drop-down indicator. Clicking it splits/closes
the view. Holding it shows (after a short delay) a menu where you can select
the view to close. This selection is remembered in
