Solved for me in FC13 with qt-4.7.0-5.fc13.i686 from kde-testing.

Here is a temporary workaround that works for me:
Create a new folder in kmail (called lost+found in my case)
rmdir ~/Mail/lost+found/cur
ln -sf ~/.kde/share/apps

After removing ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail/autosave completely, kmail does rebuild
the directory, but without index, and still unable to open the messages

To be more precise:
It works when you remove a quote on the line where the cursor is at (but
nothing is selected)
