The solution (for me) under Kubuntu 20.04 was to modify /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf
after the line:
oid_section = new_oids
by adding:
openssl_conf = default_conf
[default_conf]
ssl_conf = ssl_sect

which I just mistakenly updated instead of this.
It's an SSL issue (the IMAP server is not configured to use long enough DH
keys).

I'd like to add that I am now also unable to add my university's IMAP server, I
get the same error message as above.

I set up a VirtualBox machine with a clean install of KDE neon and got the same
enigmatic error message.
Connecting to the IMAP server of a different e-mail provider works, so it is
something specific to my setup
