KR> dual plugs

2017-01-31 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
I have a pair of heads for 2180 VW and it appears that they are machined for
dual plugs but I am bit confused because the secondary holes are drilled and
have tubes that come up into the valve cover area. I don't see how plugs can be
used there unless the tubes are supposed to be extended up through the the
valve cover. The holes are opposite the original plug holes.
Does anybody know if these are actually for plugs or how this is supposed to
work?
Thanks

KR> opinions on spars

2017-02-01 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
HI All;
I tried to post some pictures of spars that I picked up in a parts buy and am
wondering about thoughts on cleaning these up for eventual use.
I have been sanding some and it seems to work fairly well but very tedious.
It does not seem like mould but I could be wrong, is this something anyone has
experience with?
These were not stored in a heated facility.
Here is a link to a video I took of them. https://youtu.be/tygecyU-nSA

I have some other videos there as well taken from my Preceptor N3 and also my
Ultra Pup which is my current magic carpet.

There is a new archive link now. I'll update the website tonight. The
Tugantek archive has been down for months, and we're unsure if it'll
ever be back up. Tom's been notified, but hasn't managed to get it back
up yet. John Bouyea stepped up to the plate and reformatted a LOT of
email files to get us all the way back to 2003, so there should be 14
years of KRnet email in the archive now, and we have a few left to load,
back into the late 90's. I'll fix the links tonight.

KR> disassembly

I guess I should have asked also n my previous email if anyone has had to open
up box spars or remove the stub wings or any other disassembly with good

I am wondering how much of a project can be saved if I have to take it apart at
all.

Re: KR> DAR inspections

2017-01-22 Thread Robert Russell via KRnet
I am kind of thinking that if I do buy it, it would just be for the parts such
as 2 Great Plains engines landing gear, canopy, wing attach fittings, cowling,
controls such as bell cranks etc.
There is enough value there for those items and anything else I could salvage
would be gravy. i.e like maybe the fuselage but if not just plan to build all
that from scratch.

Here in the US. It is NOT recommended to buy a project under construction
without a builders log.  The thing is you have to prove that 51% of the
airplane by amateurs and without a log there's no way to prove.  From what I've
heard Canada has a much more stringent process. My opinion, do not buy it
without a builders log. You're buying nothing but a problem.

Hi All;
I am considering a project in the U.S. that has no documentation whatsoever and
am wondering about DAR inspections.
I want to import this project into Canada and our inspections require a pre
cover (before box spars etc,are closed in) .
What I am wondering is if I might find a number or something that shows it was
done in the U.S .
In Canada each component is stamped or stickered to show it has been done.
The project is fairly complete all spars are closed, wings closed etc.although
it would still meet 51% requirement here in Canada.
I f I can show the inspections I an import as parts and then continue it.
Any thoughts about this?
Thanks

If push comes to shove, your wife's iron will do the job. I have removed a
4' section from the side by using an iron. (no steam) to heat the plywood
over the glue line and then prying up the wood and holding it up for a few
seconds to keep it from sticking again when you move on to another area. It
took about one hour to remove the side. (about 2' x 4').

Too many variables, the biggest is your ASI. Actual speed is
probably in the 45 to 55 mph range depending on size of wing on your
KR and weight. On the first flight, after you get comfortable , go
to altitude (your should already be there) , in level flight slowly
reduce power to idle and let the plane decelerate. Have the
altimeter pegged on a number and hold it perfectly level. As you
approach the stall you will probably feel slight buffeting. Note the
indicated airspeed when the nose drops and recover. Multiply the
read by 1.3 and use that for your approach speed.

My KR gives it up at about 55 indicated but it is heavy and shorter
then stock wings. Light weight and longer Diehl type wings will be
slower. My approach speed with those numbers would be about 72 mph
but it feels more comfortable at 80 mph with speed brake full out. I
get a bit of extra float and make wheel landings but can easily
handle 2500 foot runways. At less than 80 for me with speed brake
out it slows rather quickly in the flare and things happen rather
quickly from flare to touchdown. I like to settle on like a feather,
not like a belly flop at the swimming pool.
:-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgdgxVgPNAk and go to the 2:40
mark of the video.

You'll get to know the comfortable speed after a couple of landings.

 > What are realistic stall speeds with flaps?

As Larry said, you'll want to go to altitude and stall it several times
to get the "indicated" stall speed, because airspeed indicators are
notoriously inaccurate at low speeds...even the fancy new electronic
versions that I've used are off at the lower end of the spectrum. For
example, N891JF stalls "hard" (nose over) at about 36 mph indicated, and
that's on the MGL iEFIS. This isn't far from what Jim Faughn reported
in his "how to land a KR" treatise, but those are indicated. GPS stall
speed is closer to the low fifties, at the altitudes that I practice
stalls at.

If you are asking what's the difference in stall speed with
"plans-built" flaps, my guess would be about two mph, three mph at the
most, based on my experience with the much larger flaps on N56ML. KR2S
N56ML stalls at 57 mph with barn door flaps, 62 mph clean at "average"
loading conditions. KR2 N891JF stalls slightly slower, and even the
belly board drops stall speed 1.5-2 mph. These are all GPS speeds,
taken on calm days in two directions probably at 4000' or so, so it'll
be a little less nearer to sea level...which you don't want to do. You
can extrapolate it though...about a 2% difference per thousand feet.
You probably already know this though.

More stall speeds are listed at http://www.krnet.org/kr-info.html ,
although their accuracy is not assured. Speaking of which, nobody's
sent me information for a newly minted airplane for probably five years.
No new KRs are flying for five years? Please do some testing and send
me your numbers...
