Dear Friends, today when I was in Aldi I spied an interesting little lamp and at $17 thought it worth giving a try. It's called the BBQ Light by Coolabah so is probably only available in Australia. The globe itself contains 12 small LEDs and they are mounted on a long aluminium swivel neck.

I have been thinking about this. That is that the student thought this was something vey easy, like gluegun crafts. I think the problem was with the person, and not necessarily with the words of the demonstrator. Unless all that was being shown was something akin to 'the bandage' or snakes.

For about the last century, most people have been making lace as a hobby rather than to earn a living, and have had some choice as to what lace to start with - some, because frequently that choice is dictated by the teacher to start with. Some teachers throw their hands up in horror if you

Lace is 'just' cross twist, in exactly the same way as knitting is 'just' knit and purl.  Why make things more complicated than you need to? When you teach someone to knit you don't go sideways and immediately start tellling them that although knitting is 'just' knit and purl, of course it's

Lace is just two stitches, cross and twist, just as knitting is two stitches, knitting and purling. But, in the case of the student that I was describing, who was an excellent knitter, she found lace to be an order of magnitude more difficult to learn. Why was that? How is lace not like

So, if it is only two stitches, like knitting, why is it so hard to learn? Devon I don't think of lace as '2 stitches' -C T. But 2 movements; Cross and twist, that go into making 3 stitches; a 2 movement stitch=CT (HS), a 3 movement stitch= CTC (cloth stitch), and a 4 movement stitch = CTCT

Devon wrote: So, if it is only two stitches, like knitting, why is it so hard to learn? Lace is not necessarily that hard to learn. Look at all the people who could learn from a book. I made lace for 15 years without ever meeting a teacher. Looked like lace, too. And I am far from alone,

This is not something I have ever come across, to this extent.  I have 'acquired' over the years several people who were originally self taught (as I was myself), and have found they fall into two main categories.  One (into which I complacently put myself) are those who have read carefully,
