Dear Arachnids ISBN Numbers are allocatedby a strict set of internationally accepted rules, and when a publisher is used the publisher buys the ISBN. This number is be used for the edition it has been purchased for and any identical reprints by that publisher. If the book is revised or the format/cover type changes then the publisher must purchase another number. If the book is reprinted by another publisher, or the author, that person must apply for a new number. We cannot get away from having the numbers changed for these reasons, but when the changes are minimal it does appear the publisher may be playing tricks - we will just have to be aware of the problem publishers.
