Well, I've changed my mind. The only way I could make it work was to use kiss stitch (CTCTC) with CS.CS (linen stitch) in each corner. I made half the stitch, put up the pin, made the kiss stitch, then returned to close the pin with the second half. It's probably not what the designer had in

My first thought on reading Sue's google-translation of the instructions for the little square was "sounds a bit like some sort of roseground"... Couldn't visualise it from Sue's diagram, and don't have the book to look for a picture of the lace itself, but it does sound as if it is worked like
